Land Rover Range Rover Velar Key History
Current Generation
The current Land Rover Range Rover Velar uses the latest key platform with the strongest encryption available. Programming requires up-to-date professional tools. We stay current and handle these on-site.
Rolling Code Era
The Range Rover Velar upgraded to rolling code transponders that change the authentication value with each use. This made replay attacks impossible and significantly improved security over fixed-code predecessors.
Budget Key Period
Base-model Range Rover Velar from this era used cost-effective transponder chip keys without remote functions. A separate remote fob was sold as an accessory. Two pieces to carry instead of one.
Next-Gen Encryption
The Range Rover Velar adopted next-generation encryption that requires the programming tool to authenticate through Land Rover's security server in real-time. No offline programming possible for new keys.
L560 Launch Year
You turn this key in your hand and it feels like a premium piece of tech, because it is. Your 2018 Velar uses a rechargeable proximity smart key with an ID47 (PCF7953) transponder chip and push button start. Programming requires server authentication through JLR Pathfinder, which means no shortcuts and no DIY workarounds.
L560 Second Year
Land Rover leaned harder into keyless entry for 2019, but the core security stayed the same: ID47 (PCF7953) chip, rechargeable smart key, server-based authentication. The difference is that PIN extraction became mandatory for aftermarket key programming. We handle that extraction on-site with our JLR VCI interface.
L560 Updated Firmware
Here is where it gets tricky. Land Rover pushed firmware updates in 2020 that blocked older programming tools from communicating with the ECU. Your Velar still uses the same ID47 (PCF7953) chip and rechargeable smart key, but only the latest JLR SDD software can talk to it. We keep our subscriptions current for exactly this reason.
L560 Mid-Cycle
The mid-cycle Velar switched to the slim K0BJXF18A proximity fob running an ID49 (HITAG Pro) chip on a CR2032 coin cell, 315 MHz. A high-security HU100 emergency blade hides inside for manual door entry. Programming still gates through JLR server authentication, so there is no DIY path, but the swap to a coin-cell fob means no more rechargeable-battery headaches. We pair it on the spot.
L560 Facelift
The 2024 facelift brought the 11.4-inch Pivi Pro screen and fresh styling, but the key system carried straight over: same K0BJXF18A proximity fob, ID49 chip, CR2032 cell, HU100 hidden blade. Your 2024 through 2026 Velar still authenticates new keys through JLR servers, and we keep current subscriptions so we can program it at your location without a tow.
Which Key Does Your Range Rover Velar Have?
If your Land Rover Range Rover Velar key fob is cracked or broken but the electronics still work, a replacement shell can be fitted. The internal circuit board and buttons transfer to a new case.
A one-piece key with the remote buttons built into the head. The blade is fixed (does not fold). You insert it into the ignition to start and use the buttons for remote lock/unlock. Common on Range Rover Velar models from the 2000s.
Basic key with a chip - turns in the ignition like a traditional key but contains a transponder that must match the immobilizer. No remote functions. The simplest and least expensive key type to replace.
A rectangular black fob with chrome trim and the Range Rover logo. It never goes into an ignition slot. You keep it in your pocket and the car detects it when you walk up. There is a hidden emergency blade inside for manual door entry.
The slim FCC K0BJXF18A proximity fob with an ID49 chip on a standard CR2032 coin cell. Same pocket-detect, walk-up operation as the launch fob, but no more rechargeable battery. A hidden HU100 high-security blade gets you in if the cell dies. New keys still authenticate through JLR servers, and we carry the tools to do it on-site.

Common Land Rover Range Rover Velar Key Issues
Range Rover Velar Vulnerable to Relay Theft
Velar smart key dies faster than expected, sometimes in days. The rechargeable fob constantly pings the car's proximity sensors even on your kitchen counter near the garage wall. Move the key farther at home; if it won't hold charge, call (805) 790-8162.
Range Rover Velar Will Not Start With Key Present
People assume the fob died when the door handle stops responding. On the Velar, the problem is often the capacitive sensor inside the handle, not your key. We test fob signal first. If fine, the handle module needs replacement, and we tell you before charging.
Dead Key Fob Battery
The rechargeable battery in your 2019 or 2020 Velar fob eventually needs a CR2032 backup swap. The catch: the immobilizer can desync during the swap, leaving a key that unlocks doors but won't start. Full re-pair through JLR diagnostic tools on-site.
Can You Program a Range Rover Velar Key Yourself?
Land Rover Range Rover Velar: Self-programming IS possible with two working keys. Insert key 1, turn to ON for 1 second, remove. Within 5 seconds, insert key 2, turn to ON for 1 second, remove. Within 10 seconds, insert new key 3, turn to ON. Wait for security light to stop flashing. Done.
Land Rover Range Rover Velar: Self-programming is NOT available. This generation requires OBD-II programming with a security PIN from the vehicle's ECU. A professional locksmith or dealer is required.
Land Rover Range Rover Velar: On-board key learning available. With a working key, cycle the ignition ON-OFF 3 times within 10 seconds, ending in ON. The security light will flash. Within 30 seconds, press any button on the new fob. Locks will cycle to confirm.

Fun Fact
A Land Rover Range Rover Velar with all keys erased from the immobilizer cannot be started even with a perfectly cut key blade - the transponder handshake must succeed first.
