Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

2019 Land Rover Range Rover Velar Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was in Midtown Ventura on a Tuesday when a Velar owner called. She was in her driveway, had already replaced the fob battery herself, and the car still would not acknowledge the key consistently.

One door handle would wake up, the other two wouldn't. The start button sometimes saw the fob and sometimes threw a key-not-detected warning mid-reach, which she described as deeply unsettling in a car at this price point.

I pulled up in the van and she handed me the fob before I even asked.

The CR2032 she had installed was a name-brand cell, but the positive contact inside the fob housing had a slight upward bow, probably from the way the old battery was pried out. The new cell was making intermittent contact, just enough to keep the fob technically alive but not enough to hold a stable signal under the proximity polling the car was constantly doing. I straightened the contact, reseated the battery, and closed the fob.

Then the actual work: hook up the diagnostic system to the OBD port, verify the key management module is seeing the fob cleanly, and walk every door handle. All four, plus the start button, twice. When everything came back solid and the dash cleared, she stood there for a second and said she had been expecting a much longer conversation.

She had called the dealer first. They told her to bring it in, that it would likely need to be diagnosed, and that depending on what they found, a new key would have to be ordered. Weeks out, minimum.

She did not need a new key. She needed the right small fix, done on site, for a fraction of what that dealer visit would have started at.
