About Hyundai Keys

Hyundai key programming requires a 6-digit PIN read from the vehicle and professional OBD-II tools, whether you need a spare key for your Tucson or you have lost every key to your Sonata. We handle it on-site at your location across the entire Hyundai lineup, from older transponder keys to current proximity smart keys.
Hyundai Smart Key and Transponder Programming, Done at Your Location

Every Hyundai built after the late 1990s requires a programmed transponder key to start, and any model with push-button start adds a 6-digit PIN-authenticated pairing process that links the smart key fob to the vehicle's immobilizer module. We use OBDStar, Xhorse, and Autel programmers that read the PIN directly from the ECM via OBD-II, which means we can handle all-keys-lost situations on most Hyundai models from 2007 through 2024 without towing and without a dealer visit. The Tucson, Santa Fe, Palisade, Elantra, and Sonata are all platforms we program on-site regularly.

Free Anti-Theft Fix for Eligible Models
If your Hyundai is a 2011 through 2022 key-start model, there is also a free anti-theft software update and hardware fix from Hyundai that your VIN may qualify for, and we can tell you on the call whether your vehicle is in the affected range before we arrive.
Security Notice for Hyundai Owners

There is an important distinction Hyundai owners need to understand about the 2011 through 2022 theft vulnerability. Only key-start models from those years were targeted in the viral hotwiring trend, because Hyundai sold those specific vehicles in the United States without an electronic immobilizer. A car without an immobilizer can be started without a programmed key using basic tools, which is exactly what the social media videos demonstrated. Push-button start Hyundais from the same model years were not affected because they use a factory immobilizer that prevents starting without a paired fob.

What Hyundai Fixed Going Forward
Hyundai standardized immobilizers on all new U.S. models from November 2021 forward.

Check Your VIN for the Free Fix
If you own a key-start Hyundai from 2011 through 2022, visit Hyundai's anti-theft site with your VIN to check eligibility for the free software update that adds an extended alarm and ignition kill, and the free hardware fix that reinforces the ignition cylinder. Both are available at no charge through Hyundai dealers.
Hyundai Dealer vs. EZ Car Keyz

Hyundai dealers typically charge over $500 for proximity smart key replacement and $150 to $250 in programming labor alone for transponder keys. Mobile locksmiths who serve Hyundai owners regularly advertise up to 75 percent savings off dealer pricing. We come to you, read the PIN on-site, and complete the job without the dealership wait or markup.

What to Do When Your Hyundai Fob Dies

Find the mechanical blade hidden inside the fob. Press and hold the small release button on the face or back of the fob to extract it. Some models require pressing the button and pulling simultaneously on the key ring end.

Locate the driver's door keyhole. On older models it is visible at the back of the door handle. On newer models a small plastic cap covers it. Slide the tip of the blade under the cap edge to pop it off, revealing the keyhole underneath. On some models the keyhole is hidden in the center of the handle or above the console and only becomes visible when you pull the handle to the open position.

Use the blade to unlock the driver's door, then get in. The dashboard will display a message such as Key not detected or Press start button with key when the fob is not recognized.

Choose the backup start method for your model year. On most 2013 and newer push-start Hyundais, touch the back of the dead fob directly against the Start/Stop button and press it while holding the brake. The button reads a passive signal from the fob's transponder chip without battery power. On 2011 through 2013 Sonata Hybrids, open the center console lid to find a slot, insert the mechanical key until the vehicle chimes, then press the start button. On other models, look for a fob insertion slot at the front of the center console, behind the driver's door above the console, or on the left side of the glovebox.
Hyundai Owners on Our Service
"Called on New Year's Day at 5 PM. Key worked on ignition and passenger door but not the driver door. He looked at the key more closely and said it could be a worn out key versus a door cylinder. Got the spare key and it worked. Saved me more than $100 compared to changing the door cylinder. Prompt, professional and fair pricing."
Gordon Harada"EZ Car Keys is by far the best locksmith I've ever used. Marco is prompt, prices are reasonable, and he has the experience that leaves you comfortable. We've used him twice and will never use anyone else!"
Traci Thomas"Simply amazing. They honored their phone quote even though the job took much longer due to problems with my ignition cylinder. They disassembled, repaired, made two new keys and programmed key fobs - all for the original quote."
