RC, 1st Generation
No security to speak of here. Your first gen Tiburon uses a plain mechanical key with no transponder chip and no immobilizer. We cut it on the spot, no programming needed, and you are back on the road in minutes.
RD, 2nd Gen Early
This is where security got serious. Hyundai added an immobilizer system with an ID46PC transponder chip inside the key head. The key still looks simple, no buttons, no remote, but the chip has to talk to your car's computer or the engine will not start. We program it on-board with the right tools.
RD, 2nd Gen Late
Hyundai combined the key and remote into one piece. Your 2004-2006 Tiburon uses a remote head key with three buttons, an ID46PC chip, and a CR2032 battery inside the fob. Programming requires OBD-II access, which means we plug into your car's diagnostic port and sync the transponder and remote together.
RD, 2nd Gen Final
The security jumped up again for the final two years. Your 2007 or 2008 Tiburon uses a Texas 4D-67 transponder chip, and programming may require server-based PIN authentication. That means more advanced tooling on our end, but we handle it in your driveway with Autel and VVDI equipment.

Ignition Cylinder Wear
Years of use wear the wafers in the cylinder, especially on 1997-2003 models with high mileage. Key sticks, refuses to turn, or feels gritty. We check first. Sometimes a repair saves it; sometimes a full replacement. On-site in Oxnard or Simi Valley.
Transponder Sync Failure
First check on a no-start Tiburon is whether the immobilizer light is blinking. That means the car doesn't recognize the transponder. Affects 2001-2008 models, often after a battery swap. We read the chip, verify the match, and reprogram if needed.
Remote Fob Battery Drain
Your 2004-2008 remote head key stops locking and unlocking from a distance, but still starts the car. Dead CR2032. Usually simple. If a fresh battery doesn't fix it, internal contacts may be corroded. Common in Camarillo and Thousand Oaks on dropped keys.
Immobilizer ECU Fault
People assume a no-start means a new key. Sometimes the key is fine and the immobilizer ECU has glitched. More common on 2003-2008 Tiburons after a dead battery or jump start. We diagnose with scan tools and often reset on-site; EEPROM read/write if needed.
Can You Program a Tiburon Key Yourself?
You can sync a keyless entry remote yourself by turning the ignition to ON and holding the UNLOCK button until the hazards flash. This only programs the remote functions. No transponder programming is needed because this generation has no chip.
Same remote pairing process: ignition to ACC, hold UNLOCK until hazards flash. But the transponder chip in your key cannot be programmed at home. That requires professional diagnostic tools and sometimes a dealer PIN code.
You can re-pair the remote buttons by turning to ACC and holding UNLOCK. However, the ID46PC transponder chip requires OBD-II programming with professional equipment. If your remote stopped working after a battery change, try the sync procedure first. If the car will not start, that is a transponder issue and you need us.
Remote pairing works the same way. But the Texas 4D-67 transponder chip in these final-year models requires OBD-II programming with possible server authentication. There is no DIY path for the transponder. Call us at (805) 790-8162 and we will handle it on-site.
