2003 Hyundai Tiburon Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A body shop in Ventura called me out to La Conchita side of the county, actually closer to the 101 near the coast. A 2003 Tiburon had come in for fender work, and somewhere in the process the owner's only key went missing. The shop had already called a locksmith before me.
That first locksmith got partway into programming and hit an error. Power may have dropped, or the sequence was interrupted, but either way he told the shop the immobilizer module was probably bad and left. The car was sitting, no working key, the shop just wanted it moved.
When I got there, standard OBD communication to the immobilizer was blocked. The previous attempt had left it in a fault state, and it was rejecting any new connection through the port. That's not a dead module. That's a recoverable condition if you have the right tools.
I pulled the immobilizer module and went to bench. Read the data directly off the chip, cleared the fault state, and rebuilt the key registration from scratch. Then I decoded the door lock cylinder to get the cut, made the remote head key on site, and ran the registration sequence clean.
First attempt after the reset, the system accepted the new key without argument.
Total time was about 80 minutes. The shop manager had already gotten a dealer quote that involved a flatbed and a multi-day turnaround. What I charged was a fraction of that, and the car was drivable before I left the lot.
