Parking at Stearns Wharf on a Tuesday is its own event. There's a stretch near the end where people leave their cars just long enough to feel guilty about it, and that's exactly where I pulled up to meet someone whose Kona Electric had a fob that stopped unlocking the car sometime over the weekend.
She wasn't locked out. She still had the key, could still flip the blade and start it, but the remote functions were completely dead. Lock button, nothing. Unlock button, nothing. She'd already swapped the CR2032 herself, which was the right instinct. Battery wasn't the problem.
I popped the fob housing open on my cart right there, checked the board and the button contacts. One of the contact pads under the lock button had enough corrosion on it to break the circuit intermittently. Common enough on older fobs, and this one had clearly seen some moisture. Cleaned the contacts, reseated the board, and tested every button before closing the housing back up. All four buttons working again.
She didn't need a new fob. She needed someone to actually look at what was wrong instead of defaulting to "replace the whole thing." The dealer would have ordered a new unit, waited on parts, and billed her for programming on top of it. The whole stop at the wharf was under half an hour.
