2020 Hyundai Kona Electric
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How do I know you're not a scam locksmith?

It's a fair question and worth asking every time. The scam pattern is consistent: a low number quoted over the phone, a different number when the job is done, and no paperwork that holds anyone to anything. Hyundai owners dealing with key problems are a common target because the situation is stressful and time-sensitive. EZ Car Keyz has over 100,000 followers across YouTube and TikTok where you can watch actual key work being done on real vehicles.

Q: Will the replacement key work exactly like the original?

Yes. The replacement flip key for your 2020 Kona Electric gets the blade cut to your vehicle and the fob registered through the immobilizer so all four buttons function the same as the factory key. I test every function before I leave: lock, unlock, and the other buttons, plus blade fitment and ignition operation. A key that only works half the time, or one where the blade binds in the cylinder, isn't a finished job.

Q: I have one working key for my Kona Electric. Should I get a spare now or wait until there's a problem?

Get the spare now. All-keys-lost on a 2020 Kona Electric is a harder job than adding a second key while you still have a working one. When you have a functional key present, the process is faster and in some cases involves fewer steps to access the security system. Once that last key is gone, the job requires a full lost-key procedure including PIN retrieval and a longer programming sequence. It also costs more.

Q: My Kona Electric fob works fine up close but the range has dropped way off. New battery didn't fix it. What's going on?

A few things can cause this. The most common one after a battery swap is the battery contact not seating fully, so the fob is running on a weak connection even with a fresh CR2032. Pop it open and check that the battery is sitting flat against both contacts with real pressure, not just resting in there. If the contact is fine, the next suspect is the fob's internal antenna or board.

2020 Hyundai Kona Electric Remote Flip Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Parking at Stearns Wharf on a Tuesday is its own event. There's a stretch near the end where people leave their cars just long enough to feel guilty about it, and that's exactly where I pulled up to meet someone whose Kona Electric had a fob that stopped unlocking the car sometime over the weekend.

She wasn't locked out. She still had the key, could still flip the blade and start it, but the remote functions were completely dead. Lock button, nothing. Unlock button, nothing. She'd already swapped the CR2032 herself, which was the right instinct. Battery wasn't the problem.

I popped the fob housing open on my cart right there, checked the board and the button contacts. One of the contact pads under the lock button had enough corrosion on it to break the circuit intermittently. Common enough on older fobs, and this one had clearly seen some moisture. Cleaned the contacts, reseated the board, and tested every button before closing the housing back up. All four buttons working again.

She didn't need a new fob. She needed someone to actually look at what was wrong instead of defaulting to "replace the whole thing." The dealer would have ordered a new unit, waited on parts, and billed her for programming on top of it. The whole stop at the wharf was under half an hour.

Hyundai Kona Electric Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Are you licensed and insured to work on Hyundai vehicles?▼

Yes. EZ Car Keyz is a California BSIS licensed locksmith company (LCO 6792), fully insured, and holds NASTF Vehicle Security Professional certification. That NASTF credential matters specifically for Hyundai work because accessing the PIN data needed to register a new fob on a 2020 Kona Electric requires verified, credentialed access through legitimate channels. Not every mobile locksmith has that, and if they don't, they either can't complete the job or they're cutting corners on how they get the security data.
