About Kia Keys

From older Sportage and Forte transponder keys to smart fobs on the Telluride, Sorento, and K5, we program Kia replacement keys on site across every generation without a dealer visit.
Every Kia Key Generation Covered, On Site at Your Car

Kia has used four distinct key systems in the US market. Early models through the late 1990s used standard metal keys with no chip. Starting around 1998 the Sportage and Spectra adopted ID46 transponder chips that need to be programmed to start the engine. Smart proximity keys with push-button start first appeared on higher-end Kia models around 2007 and spread to the full lineup through the 2010s. Current models including the Telluride, Sportage, Sorento, and K5 use advanced 4D and 48-series chip smart fobs that require OBD-II programming with a 6-digit security PIN.

Security Notice for Kia Owners

Between 2011 and 2021, Kia sold millions of vehicles in the US without electronic immobilizers in the base trim lineup. This was a deliberate cost-cutting decision for the American market. Every other major market received immobilizers as standard during the same period. The consequence became national news starting in 2021 when viral TikTok videos showed exactly how to hotwire these vehicles using a USB cable, triggering an 800 percent increase in Kia thefts in some cities.

Which Kia Models Were Affected
Models most affected include the Sportage, Sorento, Soul, Forte, and Optima from that era. Push-button start models were not affected because they used a proximity fob system that inherently requires chip authentication.

The Retrofit and the Fix
In 2023, Kia and Hyundai agreed to retrofit over 4 million vehicles with a hardware fix: a zinc-reinforced sleeve protecting the ignition cylinder. Over 8 million additional vehicles received a software update that activates the alarm when the ignition is tampered with. If you own a 2011 to 2021 Kia with a traditional turn-key ignition, check with your dealer whether the hardware upgrade has been applied to your VIN. All Kia vehicles sold in the US as of the 2022 model year now include electronic immobilizers as standard.
Kia Dealer vs. EZ Car Keyz

Kia dealers charge $330 to $1,000 for a smart key replacement, and real-world quotes for models like the Soul have come in at over $1,200 per key including programming labor. We handle the same job on site at your car for significantly less.

What to Do When Your Kia Fob Dies

Press the thumb button on the side or back of the fob to release the hidden mechanical key blade. Use the blade to access the door lock cylinder concealed behind the cover on the driver side door handle. Pop the cover and insert the blade to unlock the door.

Once inside, the backup start method depends on your model year. On 2020 and newer Kia models, hold the top of the fob with the logo facing the Start/Stop button, press the brake, and press the button. The button reads the passive chip in the fob at close range even with a dead battery.

On 2014 to 2019 models, hold the fob flat directly against the face of the Start/Stop button with the chip side facing the button. Press the brake and press the button. You may hear a beep or see the immobilizer light flash to confirm detection.

On 2010 to 2013 models with push-button start, look for a fob slot at the front of the center console between the seats. Insert the dead fob key ring up with buttons facing the rear, press the brake, and press the Start/Stop button as normal.
Kia Owners on Our Service
"Called on New Year's Day at 5 PM. Key worked on ignition and passenger door but not the driver door. He looked at the key more closely and said it could be a worn out key versus a door cylinder. Got the spare key and it worked. Saved me more than $100 compared to changing the door cylinder. Prompt, professional and fair pricing."
Gordon Harada"EZ Car Keys is by far the best locksmith I've ever used. Marco is prompt, prices are reasonable, and he has the experience that leaves you comfortable. We've used him twice and will never use anyone else!"
Traci Thomas"Simply amazing. They honored their phone quote even though the job took much longer due to problems with my ignition cylinder. They disassembled, repaired, made two new keys and programmed key fobs - all for the original quote."
