Pre-Chip Era
The earliest Kia EV9 models used plain mechanical keys with no electronic component. Any locksmith or hardware store could duplicate these keys by sight. No immobilizer, no transponder, no programming required.
Integrated Fob Design
Kia consolidated all key functions into a single sleek fob for the EV9 — remote lock/unlock, proximity start, trunk release, and remote start in one unit with no separate pieces.
Unified Fob Era
Kia unified the EV9's remote and transponder into a single remote-head key. The transponder chip moved from the key blade into the fob body, and a flip blade provided the physical key function.
Basic Immobilizer Period
During this period, the Kia EV9 used a first-generation immobilizer system. The transponder chip in the key sent a static code to the receiver ring around the ignition. On-board programming was possible with two working keys.
Which Key Does Your EV9 Have?
A compact fob with a metal key blade that folds out. Press the button on the side and the blade flips out for the ignition. Lock/unlock buttons are on the fob body. Common on mid-2000s to mid-2010s EV9 models.
A key with a transponder chip but no remote buttons. You get immobilizer security (the car will not start without a programmed chip) but no remote lock/unlock. A separate fob can be added for remote functions.

Smart key systems like those on the Kia EV9 can be targeted by relay theft devices that amplify the fob's signal through walls. Store your fob in a Faraday pouch or metal container when at home to block signal amplification.
Second Key Stopped Working After Programming New One
On some Kia EV9 systems, programming a new key can erase existing keys from the immobilizer memory. All keys should be present during the programming session. If a key was left out, it needs to be reprogrammed.
Aftermarket EV9 Key Will Not Program
Not all aftermarket key blanks are compatible with Kia EV9 vehicles. The transponder chip type must match exactly. If an online-purchased key will not program, it may have the wrong chip. We carry verified-compatible blanks.
Can You Program a EV9 Key Yourself?
Kia EV9: Fob button programming can be done at home. Enter the vehicle, close all doors, insert key in ignition, cycle ON-OFF the specified number of times, then press LOCK on new fob. Transponder pairing still requires a locksmith.
Kia EV9: Kia requires PIN-based authorization for any key programming on this platform. The PIN is not in the owner's manual — it must be read from the vehicle's computer.
Kia EV9: Self-programming is NOT available. This generation requires OBD-II programming with a security PIN from the vehicle's ECU. A professional locksmith or dealer is required.
