About Mini Keys

MINI is owned by BMW and runs BMW's full CAS immobilizer and Comfort Access system. We program replacement keys and smart fobs for all MINI generations on site, without the dealer wait.
Small Car, BMW-Level Key System - Programmed On Site

MINI has been a BMW brand since 2001, and every Cooper, Clubman, Countryman, and Convertible built since then uses BMW's key architecture. The first-generation R50 and R53 models from 2001 to 2006 used BMW's EWS Electronic Watchdog System with a transponder chip key. The R56 generation from 2007 to 2013 introduced MINI's smart proximity key with Comfort Access and push-button start.

BMW Tools Required for Every Generation
The current F56 and F60 generations use BMW's CAS4 and Body Domain Controller systems with hands-free entry, remote services, and on newer models ultra-wideband proximity detection. All of this means MINI key replacement requires BMW-specific programming tools, not generic key machines. We carry those tools and handle every generation at your location.
What Makes MINI Keys Different

Most people assume a small car means a simple key. MINI is the exception. Because BMW has owned the brand since 2001, every MINI built under BMW uses the same CAS immobilizer architecture found in 3 Series, 5 Series, and X5 vehicles.

Three Generations of BMW Security
The R50 and R53 used BMW's EWS Electronic Watchdog System. The R56 generation moved to CAS2 with encrypted rolling codes. The F56 and F60 use CAS4 and the Body Domain Controller. This matters in practice because MINI keys cannot be programmed with the generic Toyota or GM key tools that cover most of the vehicles a locksmith sees. They require BMW-specific software and CAS module access.

MINI Dealer vs. EZ Car Keyz

MINI dealers charge $270 to $410 for a smart key with Comfort Access programming, and there are only 8 MINI dealers in all of Southern California. We bring BMW-compatible programming tools directly to your car.

Pro Tip

On MINI Cooper models with push-button start, the backup location for a dead fob is not the start button itself. It is the key icon symbol on the right side of the steering column, just below the dash at roughly the position where a traditional ignition slot would be. That icon marks the location of a short-range RFID antenna that reads the passive chip inside the fob even with zero battery power. Hold the flat face of the dead fob against that icon, press the brake, and then press the start button normally.

Emergency Blade for Door Access
You also have a hidden mechanical blade inside the fob for door access. Press the release tab on the fob body and slide it out, then use it on the lock cylinder concealed under the cover on the driver's door handle.
MINI Key Fob Battery Guide

How to Open

Battery Type
All BMW-era MINI push-to-start fobs from 2007 onward use a CR2032. The R56 generation fobs from 2007 to 2013 have notably brittle plastic clips that snap if you force a metal tool into the seam. Use a plastic pry tool and work slowly around the seam rather than prying at one point. Replacing the battery does not erase CAS programming. If the fob does not respond after a fresh battery, try holding the unlock button close to the car for about 15 to 30 seconds before assuming the fob needs reprogramming.
Mini Owners on Our Service
"Called on New Year's Day at 5 PM. Key worked on ignition and passenger door but not the driver door. He looked at the key more closely and said it could be a worn out key versus a door cylinder. Got the spare key and it worked. Saved me more than $100 compared to changing the door cylinder. Prompt, professional and fair pricing."
Gordon Harada"EZ Car Keys is by far the best locksmith I've ever used. Marco is prompt, prices are reasonable, and he has the experience that leaves you comfortable. We've used him twice and will never use anyone else!"
Traci Thomas"Simply amazing. They honored their phone quote even though the job took much longer due to problems with my ignition cylinder. They disassembled, repaired, made two new keys and programmed key fobs - all for the original quote."
