Comfort Access is MINI's branded name for the passive keyless entry and push-button start system. It uses proximity sensors to detect the fob and unlock automatically as you approach. Yes, we program Comfort Access fobs on site. These require BMW-specific CAS module programming which we carry the tools for.

Q: What if I have lost all of my MINI keys?

We handle MINI all-keys-lost situations on site. For R50 and R56 generation models we use OBD-II tools to read the CAS module and program new keys from scratch. Newer F56 and F60 models require additional CAS4 or BDC module access, which our BMW-compatible equipment handles. No dealer visit or tow required for most MINI models.

Q: How long does a MINI key replacement take on site?

Most MINI key replacements take 45 to 75 minutes on site. The BMW CAS programming process takes a bit longer than simpler makes but is fully handled in one visit. All-keys-lost jobs run a bit longer due to the module read process.

Q: My MINI shows 'Key Battery Low.' Does replacing the battery require reprogramming?

No. Swapping the CR2032 battery in a MINI fob does not erase the programming. The CAS pairing is stored in the module, not the fob battery. After a battery replacement the fob should work immediately. If it does not respond, try holding the unlock button near the car for about 15 to 30 seconds to resync. If that fails the fob may need a full reprogram, which we handle on site.

Three Generations of BMW Security

R56 Fob Shell Cracking

The R56 Cooper fob from 2007 to 2013 uses a plastic shell that becomes brittle with age, especially in Southern California heat. Drops crack the housing, expose the circuit board, and can knock the battery loose. If the internals are intact the fix is a new shell, not a whole new fob. We carry compatible shells and swap them on site without any reprogramming.

Comfort Access Fob Not Detected

When your MINI does not detect the fob at normal proximity range, the usual causes are a weak battery, water damage to the circuit board, or a CAS module error. On R56 and later models the backup procedure is to hold the fob against the key icon on the right side of the steering column rather than the start button itself. If a fresh battery does not resolve detection, the fob or CAS module needs professional diagnosis.

CAS Module Programming Issues

MINI's Car Access System module is what authenticates every key. When a key is replaced with an unprogrammed blank, bought online, or transferred from a different vehicle, the CAS rejects it and the car will not start. CAS programming requires BMW-specific tools, not generic OBD key programmers. We carry the right equipment and handle it on site.

Fast Battery Drain on Aging Fobs

R56 and R55 Clubman fobs from 2007 to 2013 are known for accelerated battery drain in older units, sometimes going through a CR2032 in under six months. The cause is usually a short on the aging circuit board or corroded contacts. If a quality battery drains unusually fast, the board likely needs inspection. We diagnose on site and replace the fob if needed.

On MINI Cooper models with push-button start, the backup location for a dead fob is not the start button itself. It is the key icon symbol on the right side of the steering column, just below the dash at roughly the position where a traditional ignition slot would be. That icon marks the location of a short-range RFID antenna that reads the passive chip inside the fob even with zero battery power. Hold the flat face of the dead fob against that icon, press the brake, and then press the start button normally.

You also have a hidden mechanical blade inside the fob for door access. Press the release tab on the fob body and slide it out, then use it on the lock cylinder concealed under the cover on the driver's door handle.

How to Open

Press the release tab or slide the small lever on the back or bottom edge of the fob to eject the mechanical key blade. With the blade removed, use the tip of the blade or a plastic pry tool to gently work the seam around the edges of the fob body. The back cover pops off to expose the battery tray.

Battery Type

All BMW-era MINI push-to-start fobs from 2007 onward use a CR2032. The R56 generation fobs from 2007 to 2013 have notably brittle plastic clips that snap if you force a metal tool into the seam. Use a plastic pry tool and work slowly around the seam rather than prying at one point. Replacing the battery does not erase CAS programming. If the fob does not respond after a fresh battery, try holding the unlock button close to the car for about 15 to 30 seconds before assuming the fob needs reprogramming.
