Push-button start is standard across all trims. Programming requires OBD-II access with BMW diagnostic equipment, plus an SGW bypass to read the security PIN. This is not a basic transponder job; it takes real BMW tooling, which we carry on every call.

Keyless Entry/Start Malfunction
Proximity receiver modules in your door handles wear out, the common cause of keyless entry failure on these Minis. You walk up, grab the handle, nothing. We test receiver modules and fob signal on-site in Oxnard or Thousand Oaks before recommending anything.
Key Fob Battery Drain
Press the button, no response. Fob feels fine but the CR2032 is dead. These smart keys drain faster than most due to continuous proximity sensing; Mini issued bulletin SI M12 07 14 about premature discharge. Swap every 4-6 months. CR2032s on every truck.
Immobilizer System Lockout
Owners assume the key broke when really the BMW EWS immobilizer lost sync after a battery disconnect, jump, or electrical work. Key is fine; the car just does not recognize it. We read the CAS module with BMW diagnostic equipment and re-pair your existing key.
Door Cylinder Actuator Failure
First check when keyless unlock dies on one door: the actuator. Mini moved door cylinder controls from the center console to the doors on the 2015 redesign. We verify fob, receiver, or actuator before quoting. Actuator failure is mechanical, not locksmith.
Can You Program a Mini Hardtop 4 Door Key Yourself?
If you already have one working key, you can register a new fob by holding it against the steering column markings and pressing the start button repeatedly. This pairs the key for starting and immobilizer recognition, and remote functions sync automatically. But the laser-cut blade still needs to be cut by a locksmith, you cannot delete lost keys this way, and if all keys are lost, this method will not work at all.
