Got a call from a guy down at Ventura Harbor Village who had walked out of one of the restaurants and his 2018 MINI Hardtop 4 Door would not respond to anything. Comfort access dead. Buttons dead. He was standing next to the car holding the fob up to every panel like it was a hotel room key.
I told him to hold the fob flat against the steering column ring and push the start button. Car fired right up. So he drove home and I met him there.
Popped the fob open on his kitchen counter. The CR2032 was not just dead, it had a faint white residue on one terminal. Cheap battery, slightly leaking. The contact plate on the board had a film on it that was enough to block the signal to the FEM module. Cleaned it with a little isopropyl, dropped in a fresh Energizer CR2032, and snapped it back together.
Then I walked the whole system. Comfort access on driver door, passenger door, and tailgate. Lock button on the door handle. All four fob buttons. Dashboard showed no drivetrain malfunction warning, no steering lock errors. Everything came back clean.
He had already called the MINI dealer in Camarillo. They told him to tow it in and leave it for diagnostics. He got the whole thing handled in his driveway in about fifteen minutes for a fraction of what that visit would have run him.
