How Paceman Key Security Evolved
R61 Base and Cooper S
A remote head key with a Texas 4D transponder chip (PCF7952/ID46) and a physical blade you turn in the ignition. The BMW CAS3 immobilizer talks to the chip every time you start the car, so a blank copy from the hardware store will not work. We program these on-board through the OBD port, usually in about 25 minutes in your driveway.
R61 John Cooper Works (JCW)
A smart key with push-button start and a Texas Crypto 4D chip running on the CAS3 immobilizer system. This is where Mini stepped up the security. Programming requires OBD-II access plus server authentication, which means more time and specialized tools, but we handle it on-site with Autel IM608 and the right BMW credentials.
Which Key Does Your Paceman Use?
This is the key most Paceman owners carry. It has a physical blade that goes into the ignition and three buttons on the fob for lock, unlock, and trunk. You turn it to start the car.
The JCW smart key stays in your pocket. You press the start button to fire the engine. There is a hidden emergency blade inside the fob for when the battery dies.
The Real Cost of a Paceman Key
Every price includes the key blank, cutting, transponder programming, and testing; no hidden fees.
EZ Car Keyz vs. the Dealer
Getting a spare made now saves you the all-keys-lost price later. We make it easy to stop putting it off.
Common Paceman Key Problems
Transponder Sync Failure
Your Paceman cranks but will not start, or the immobilizer light stays on. Usually a dead 12V or jump knocked the CAS3 module out of sync with your transponder. We relearn the key through the OBD port on-site, no tow needed.
Fob Battery Drain
The CR2032 in your Paceman fob drains fast. The transponder polling cycle in the R61, especially ALL4 models, pulls power even with the key on the counter. Swap every 12 months. If drain repeats after a fresh battery, fob internals may need replacing.
Blade Wear on Ignition
First check when a Paceman owner in Simi Valley says the key feels rough: blade wear. The HU100 blade on 2013-2015 models wears down ignition tumblers, and a worn blade accelerates the problem. We cut a fresh blade to original spec and test the cylinder.
Keyless Entry Glitch (JCW Smart Key)
JCW owners think the smart key died when doors will not unlock. Real culprit on 2015-2016 is moisture in the door handle sensor, not the key. Wet weather in Oxnard or a car wash triggers it. Use the emergency blade, then hold the fob to the start button.
Can You Program a Paceman Key Yourself?
No DIY self-programming procedure exists for the R61 Paceman. The BMW CAS3 immobilizer requires professional diagnostic equipment to write a new transponder. You need a locksmith or dealer for this one.
The JCW runs a CAS3 system with server authentication. There is no self-programming option. This requires OBD-II programming with BMW server access, which we carry the credentials and tools for on every call.

Did You Know?
You would not guess it, but your Mini Paceman R61 shares its BMW CAS3 immobilizer system with contemporary BMW MINI models. That means the same professional programming tools that work on a BMW 3 Series of the same era, like BMW ISTA, work on your Paceman. It is one of the perks of Mini being part of the BMW family since 1994.
