Q: What exactly is a remote head key and what does each part of it do?

It's a single unit that does two separate jobs. The blade cuts into the ignition cylinder and turns the car on mechanically. The electronics inside handle two things independently: a transponder that communicates with the vehicle's immobilizer so the engine is authorized to run, and the remote transmitter that talks to the door locks wirelessly when you press the buttons.

Q: Do you come out after hours or on weekends in North Ventura?

Q: My Paceman starts fine but the remote buttons stopped working. Do I need to reprogram the whole key?

Not necessarily. When the remote buttons die but the car starts normally, the transponder is doing its job. The remote side is a separate signal, and the first thing to rule out is the battery. A CR2032 that's low enough to lose remote range will still pass enough power for the transponder to work at close range in the ignition. Swap the CR2032, make sure the contacts aren't bent or corroded inside the fob, and retest.

Q: I lost my only key for the Paceman. Is all-keys-lost harder on these, and will the old key work afterward?

All-keys-lost on the Paceman is a standard job, not a crisis. I connect through the OBD port, clear the existing key memory, and register the new remote head key fresh. Once that's done, any key that was previously paired, including a lost one if someone finds it, is erased and will not start the car. You get a cut blade and a working remote out of it. Plan for roughly 45 minutes on site.

2013 MINI Paceman Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

North Ventura, mid-morning on a Tuesday. A guy called because his Paceman wasn't recognizing his key. He'd already done the obvious stuff, new battery, tried it closer to the wheel, the whole thing. Car just sat there with a warning on the dash and wouldn't turn over.

He found me online and figured I was worth a shot before calling the dealer. Good call.

I pulled up to his place with the van, got the fob open on the hood where he could watch. Battery contacts looked fine, and the CR2032 he'd put in was seated right. So we weren't dealing with a bad battery swap. I moved to the OBD port, ran the diagnostic, and found the key had lost its pairing. Not uncommon on these when the battery goes fully dead before the owner replaces it, which is exactly what happened here.

Programmed the remote head key on site, cut the blade to match, ran through every function. Locks, unlock, ignition. Everything worked.

He'd called the dealer the day before out of curiosity. They wanted to schedule him out five days and the quote made him wince. We handled it in about 45 minutes in his driveway for a fraction of that.

He said he was going to tell his neighbor, who also drives a Paceman. I told him I'd be out the same day if she called.
