Got a call from a guy over in the Montalvo neighborhood in Ventura. His 2013 Paceman was sitting in the driveway and the key would turn but the engine just cranked and died every time. Dash lit up with the steering lock warning and the key symbol. He had already been on the phone with the MINI dealer and they quoted him a week-and-a-half wait just to get a diagnostic appointment, then the key order on top of that.
I pulled up and started with the basics. His IYZKEYR5602 remote head key looked fine physically, blade was clean, battery was a fresh CR2032. But when I ran the CAS3 through the OBD port, it wasn't reading the transponder at all. The ID44 chip inside the key had given up.
Cut a new blade to the R61 sidebar profile right there on the van, programmed the PCF7945 transponder chip to his CAS3, synced the three-button remote. Lock, unlock, trunk. Then the real test: cold start, restart, restart again. No warning lights, no crank-and-die.
He stood there with his arms crossed through the whole thing, not saying a word. When it fired clean the third time he just nodded once and said "okay, good." That was the whole review.
Took about 25 minutes total. He had his afternoon back and spent a fraction of what the dealer route would have cost.
