How Mini Convertible Keys Changed Over the Years
R52, 1st Gen
You turn this key in the ignition like any other key, but inside the head there is an ID46 transponder chip that talks to the EWS immobilizer module. Without that chip handshake, the engine will not start. It is a remote head key with a standard cut blade and three buttons for lock, unlock, and trunk. We program it through the OBD-II port, which means no pulling modules and no bench work.
R57, 2nd Gen
Mini stepped things up here with a flip key design and a high-security blade that requires a specialized cutter. The chip changed to an ID44T, and the immobilizer jumped to the CAS3 system, which needs a PIN extracted from the BMW server or a CAS dump. Still programmed through OBD-II, but the security is noticeably tighter than the first generation.
F57, 3rd Gen
This is where security got serious. Your Mini Convertible moved to a smart key with push-button start, an ID46 chip, and the CAS4 immobilizer. The blade is laser cut, and programming requires server authentication. That means the key has to be authorized through BMW's backend before your car will accept it.
F57 LCI
The electronics got an update, and the immobilizer moved to CAS4+. Same smart key form factor with an ID46 chip and laser-cut emergency blade, but the programming security is even tighter. Every key requires dealer-level tools and server authorization. We handle it with our Autohex and ISTA setup, so you do not need a tow to the dealer.
Which Key Does Your Mini Convertible Use?
A traditional key with buttons built into the head. You insert it into the ignition to start the car. The transponder chip is embedded inside.
The blade folds into the fob body when not in use. Press the button on the side and the blade flips out. Still goes into the ignition to start.
Keep it in your pocket and press the start button. The laser-cut emergency blade is hidden inside the fob for manual door entry if the battery dies.
Same proximity key design as the 2014-2015 but with updated electronics. Push-button start is standard across all trims.

Common Mini Convertible Key Problems
Convertible Top Key Fob Interference
Your remote stops locking and the convertible top starts acting up at the same time. That combo points to the hydraulic control module failing, not your fob. Regular on 2005-2013 in Oxnard and Camarillo. We test the fob signal first to confirm.
EWS Module Failure
Owners often think they need a new key when a 2005-2008 Convertible cranks but will not start. Usually a corrupted EWS immobilizer module. It loses sync with the transponder, and even a new programmed key will not fix it. EWS needs swap and re-sync to the DME.
CAS Battery Drain
Comfort Access antenna rings in your 2014-2018 Convertible can develop parasitic draw that slowly kills your car battery. Symptom looks like a dead fob: smart key stops being detected. We check vehicle battery voltage and antenna ring function first.
Transponder Chip Wear
On 2005-2015 models we test transponder chip signal strength first. ID46 chips in older keys degrade, causing intermittent no-starts (fires today, dead tomorrow). If the chip is failing, we chip-transplant into a new shell or cut a fresh key with fresh chip.
Can You Program a Mini Convertible Key Yourself?
You can pair the remote lock and unlock buttons yourself using a simple procedure with your existing key. But the transponder chip that actually lets the engine start requires professional OBD-II programming with tools like the Autel IM608. Remote buttons, yes. Ignition start, no.
No DIY option here. The CAS3 system requires professional diagnostic equipment and a PIN code from the BMW server. You need a locksmith or dealer for both the remote and the transponder programming.
The CAS4 immobilizer requires server authentication through BMW's backend. There is no at-home workaround. This one needs professional tools and an active server connection.
Same as the 2014-2015 but with even tighter CAS4+ security. Every key must be authorized through BMW's server. Professional programming is the only path.

Did You Know?
Most people do not know this: the 2005 Mini Convertible (R52) was the first open-top Mini since 1969. That is a 36-year gap between droptop Minis. When BMW revived the convertible, they paired the classic design with their EWS electronic immobilizer, making it one of the first small convertibles with modern anti-theft technology baked in from the factory.
