Got a call from a guy over in Skofield Park, Santa Barbara, standing next to his 2010 MINI Convertible with the top still down. Both keys gone. One lost at the beach a month ago, the second one fell out of his shorts pocket somewhere between his front door and the car. He was already looking up tow trucks when he found my number.
I pulled up, ran the VIN to confirm the CAS3 module version, and got to work through the OBD-II port. On these R57s, the CAS3 needs an EEPROM read to pull the ISN and sync a new key when there is nothing left to work with. Read the CAS3 data, extracted the key information, and decoded the HU92 lock to cut a fresh blade on site.
The part most people do not see is the programming side. The new Hitag2 transponder has to be written and married to the CAS3 so the EWS handshake passes and the DME lets the engine crank. First turn, dash cleared, engine fired right up. Then I tested all three buttons on the remote, lock, unlock, trunk, and cycled the top just to make sure nothing was acting odd.
He asked what the dealer quoted. I just told him they typically need the car towed in, it sits for a day or two, and the bill is a lot heavier. He already had his answer.
