I was parked along the Funk Zone stretch on a Sunday when a call came in from someone near the wine tasting corridor. 2010 MINI Convertible, top was down, and the key had just stopped talking to the car. Lock button worked sometimes. Unlock was hit or miss. And the car was showing a key-not-detected warning on the dash even with the key physically in the ignition.
She had already done the obvious thing and bought a CR2032 at a gas station. Swapped it herself. Problem stayed.
When I got there I could see the issue before I even opened the fob. The blade on a remote head key takes a lot of daily torque from being turned in the ignition, and over time that stress works its way into the body of the key. The seam had cracked just enough that the battery was sitting at a slight angle and not making consistent contact with both terminals. A gas station battery swap is not going to fix that.
I replaced the fob body, transferred everything over, seated a fresh CR2032 correctly, and confirmed all three buttons were registering clean. Then I tested ignition function, walked both doors, and made sure the dash was happy before I packed up.
The dealer would have wanted her to schedule an appointment, probably order the part, and come back. She was drinking a glass of rosé on the sidewalk twenty minutes after I arrived.
