PATS stands for Passive Anti-Theft System and it is Ford's transponder-based immobilizer. It was introduced on the 1999 F-150 and spread across the full lineup through the early 2000s. If your Ford was built after 1998, it almost certainly has PATS. When you insert or present a key, the system reads the transponder chip and will not allow the fuel pump or starter to engage if the chip is not recognized. A correctly cut key without a programmed chip will turn in the ignition but the engine will not start. We program PATS keys on site using OBD tools without a dealer appointment.

Yes. The F-150 is one of our highest-volume service vehicles. For 1999 through 2014 models we handle the full job on site using the correct transponder chip and OBD programming. For 2015 and newer F-150s with the HU101 keyway and 128-bit 46 chip, we cut the high-security blade on site and program the flip fob or smart key to your truck through the OBD port. All-keys-lost on any F-150 generation requires a PIN pulled from the instrument cluster module, which our tools retrieve automatically.

Ford flip keys were introduced in 2015 on the F-150 and other models. The key blade folds into the fob body and springs out when you press a button. These still require blade insertion in the ignition to start the vehicle. Ford smart keys, introduced in 2018, have a small emergency blade hidden inside but are designed for push-to-start vehicles where the blade is used only for manual door unlock. The smart key communicates with the vehicle's proximity system and allows entry and starting without inserting anything. We program both types on site.

In most cases, yes. For 1999 through 2023 Ford models we handle all-keys-lost on site using OBD tools that pull a security PIN from the instrument cluster or PCM, then program new keys without erasing anything until at least two new keys are ready. The system requires a minimum of two programmed keys to complete the all-keys-lost process. For the 2021 F-150 Lightning and other recent EV models we confirm tool compatibility upfront before starting the job.

Start with the fob battery. Most Ford fobs use a CR2032 and the dashboard will show a key battery low warning before the battery fully dies. If a fresh battery does not restore detection, the next step is checking whether the fob lost sync with the BCM, which can happen after a dead battery or after the vehicle battery is disconnected. Pre-2018 Fords often restore sync after disconnecting the vehicle battery for 15 to 30 minutes. On 2018 and newer models a sync reset typically requires an OBD tool. We can diagnose and fix either situation on site.

The procedure depends on your model. On Explorer, place the fob in the small pocket at the front of the center console, press the brake, and push start. On Focus 2015 and newer, lift the center console armrest, remove the storage tray, and place the fob on the symbol inside. On Edge 2020 and newer, use the small shelf at the bottom of the center console. On older models like the Fiesta and C-Max, hold the fob against the steering column where the ignition would be. In all cases, press the brake and push the start button normally. The vehicle reads the transponder chip passively without any battery power in the fob.

For most 2000 through 2018 Ford models, yes, provided the FCC ID matches your vehicle. The CWTWB1U331 platform covers a wide range of F-Series, Explorer, Fusion, and Escape remote head keys through 2016. The N5F-A08TAA covers 2015 through 2016 flip keys on F-150, Explorer, and Fusion. For 2018 and newer smart keys using the M3N-A2C93142300 FCC, compatibility is tighter and we recommend confirming before you purchase.
