About Ford Keys

Ford key replacement overview in Ventura County

Ford's PATS immobilizer system has evolved through five generations since 1999, from the original 4C chip key on the F-150 to the encrypted 128-bit flip keys and push-to-start smart keys on current models. We carry the right hardware and programming tools for every generation, on site at your location.

Every Ford Key Type, Cut and Programmed On Site

Ford

Ford introduced the Passive Anti-Theft System on the 1999 F-150, making it the first Ford truck to require a programmed transponder chip key to start. That original 4C chip gave way to the encrypted 4D63 chip in 2004, and in 2015 Ford moved to the high-security HU101 keyway with a 128-bit ID46 chip, merging the separate key and remote into a single flip fob.

Ford The Smart Key Era

The Smart Key Era

The 2018 model year brought the current smart key design with an internal emergency blade, now used across the F-150, Explorer, Escape, Ranger, Fusion, and Edge lineup. Programming any of these requires a PIN pulled from the instrument cluster or PCM via the OBD port.

Ford F-150 Key Replacement

Ford

The F-150 is the most serviced Ford vehicle we see, and it has gone through more key system changes than almost any other truck on the road. From 1975 through 1998 it ran purely mechanical keys with no chip, just a blade cut to code. The 1999 model year introduced Ford's first transponder, a 4C chip on the H72 keyway, alongside the PATS II immobilizer that shut down the fuel pump and starter without a recognized key. In 2004 Ford upgraded to the encrypted 4D63 chip on the H92 keyway, which became standard across most of the F-Series through 2014.

Ford The 2015 High-Security Upgrade

The 2015 High-Security Upgrade

The 2015 generation was the biggest change in decades: a high-security HU101 keyway with a 128-bit ID46 chip, with the remote and key blade merged into a single flip fob. Push-to-start F-150s from 2015 through 2017 got a separate smart key with an emergency blade and a proximity pocket under the start button. Then in 2018 Ford standardized the M3N-A2C93142300 smart key across the full F-Series lineup, which is still in use today.

Ford Dealer vs. EZ Car Keyz

Ford dealer vs EZ Car Keyz pricing comparison

Ford dealerships charge $230 to $420 for a transponder key and $330 to $550 or more for a smart key replacement, with a $100 to $200 diagnostic fee before any work begins. An all-keys-lost job can run $500 to $1,000 once towing is factored in. We handle most Ford key jobs on site at your location for significantly less, with no tow required and no multi-day wait.

Ford Key Problems We Fix

Sound familiar? We handle all of these -on site, same day.

Ford Dead or Weak Fob Battery
Dead or Weak Fob Battery
The most common Ford key issue across every model. Most Ford fobs use a CR2032 battery and the dashboard shows a key battery low warning before total failure. Symptoms progress from reduced range to intermittent detection to total non-response. RF interference from phone chargers and GPS units in the cabin can mimic a dead battery on F-150s and Explorers. A fresh battery takes two minutes and requires no reprogramming.
Ford Fob Lost Sync With the BCM
Fob Lost Sync With the BCM
On pre-2018 Fords, disconnecting the vehicle battery or replacing the fob battery can cause the BCM to lose sync with the key fob, resulting in a Key Not Detected message even with a fresh fob battery. The fix on most 1999 through 2017 models is a vehicle battery disconnect for 15 to 30 minutes. On 2018 and newer models with the updated BCM architecture, an OBD tool is needed to restore the sync. We handle both on site.
Ford Worn Blade on Pre-2015 Key Fobs
Worn Blade on Pre-2015 Key Fobs
High-mileage F-150s, Explorers, and Fusions from 2000 through 2014 frequently show blade wear on the H75 and H92 key profile. The blade deforms from repeated ignition insertions and eventually stops engaging the cylinder cleanly, causing the key to turn stiffly or not at all. On these generations the blade and fob are a single unit, so a blade that no longer functions means a new key is needed. We cut and program replacements on site.
Ford PATS Not Recognizing the Key After a Repair
PATS Not Recognizing the Key After a Repair
On Ford vehicles with PATS, any repair that involves disconnecting or replacing the PCM, instrument cluster, or BCM can cause the immobilizer to lose its key memory. The engine will crank but not start, and there is no warning light beyond the standard PATS theft indicator. This is distinct from a fob battery issue and requires reprogramming the existing keys back to the vehicle via the OBD port. We diagnose and reprogram on site without any additional parts in most cases.

How Ford Keys Have Changed Over the Years

Ford Standard Mechanical Key (1975 to 1998)
1975 to 1998
Standard Mechanical Key
All Ford models including the F-150, Mustang, Explorer, and Taurus used purely mechanical keys with no chip and no immobilizer. Remote keyless entry fobs appeared starting in 1993 on the F-Series, operating on radio frequency for door locks only, but the ignition remained a simple cut key. Any correctly cut blank would start the vehicle.
Ford PATS II Transponder Key (4C Chip, H72 Keyway) (1999 to 2003)
1999 to 2003
PATS II Transponder Key (4C Chip, H72 Keyway)
Ford introduced the Passive Anti-Theft System on the 1999 F-150, making it the first Ford truck to require a programmed chip key. The 4C transponder communicates with the ignition ring and the PCM performs a handshake within one second of key presentation. No handshake, no fuel, no start. The remote fob was updated to the CWTWB1U331 platform in 3 and 4-button configurations.
Ford E-PATS Encrypted Transponder (4D63 Chip, H92 Keyway) (2004 to 2014)
2004 to 2014
E-PATS Encrypted Transponder (4D63 Chip, H92 Keyway)
Ford upgraded to the 4D63 chip with encrypted PATS, making the transponder signal significantly harder to clone than the 4C generation. The H92 keyway replaced H72. This platform became standard across the F-Series, Explorer, Fusion, Escape, Mustang, and most other Ford models through 2014. The CWTWB1U331 remote remained in use throughout.
Ford High-Security Flip Key (128-Bit ID46 Chip, HU101 Keyway) (2015 to 2017)
2015 to 2017
High-Security Flip Key (128-Bit ID46 Chip, HU101 Keyway)
The HU101 high-security keyway arrived with the 2015 F-150, paired with a 128-bit ID46 chip that provides substantially stronger encryption than 4D63. Ford merged the remote and key into a single flip fob for the first time. Push-to-start models this generation used a separate 3-button smart key with an emergency blade inside the fob body.
Ford Standardized Smart Key (M3N-A2C93142300) (2018 to Present)
2018 to Present
Standardized Smart Key (M3N-A2C93142300)
Ford unified push-to-start models across the F-Series, Explorer, Edge, Escape, Ranger, and Fusion under a single 3-button smart key design with a hidden emergency blade. The HU101 keyway and 128-bit ID46 chip carried over. This is the current standard on all Ford push-to-start vehicles and requires OBD programming with a PATS-compatible scan tool.

Security Notice for Ford Owners

Ford security note

Ford F-150s and other keyless entry models have become targets for relay attacks, where two thieves use signal amplification devices to extend the reach of the fob inside your home to the truck parked outside. The fob thinks it is next to the vehicle, the truck thinks the authorized fob is present, and the doors unlock and the engine starts without the key ever leaving your nightstand.

Ford The 2025 Flipper Zero Lawsuit

The 2025 Flipper Zero Lawsuit

Ford is also named in a class-action lawsuit filed in 2025 alleging that the rolling code systems on certain F-Series and other keyless models can be decoded from a single intercepted signal using tools like the Flipper Zero, allowing thieves to replay lock, unlock, and trunk commands.

Ford Ultra-Wideband On Newer Trucks

Ultra-Wideband On Newer Trucks

Newer F-150 models may use Ultra-Wideband proximity verification, which resists relay attacks more effectively than standard low-frequency keyless systems.

Ford How To Protect Your Ford

How To Protect Your Ford

For trucks that are not UWB-equipped, the most practical countermeasure is storing key fobs in a Faraday pouch or a small metal tin when the vehicle is parked overnight. A physical steering wheel lock adds a second deterrent layer that most relay thieves will simply skip past.

Ford Owners on Our Service

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"Called on New Year's Day at 5 PM. Key worked on ignition and passenger door but not the driver door. He looked at the key more closely and said it could be a worn out key versus a door cylinder. Got the spare key and it worked. Saved me more than $100 compared to changing the door cylinder. Prompt, professional and fair pricing."

Gordon Harada

"EZ Car Keys is by far the best locksmith I've ever used. Marco is prompt, prices are reasonable, and he has the experience that leaves you comfortable. We've used him twice and will never use anyone else!"

Traci Thomas
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"Simply amazing. They honored their phone quote even though the job took much longer due to problems with my ignition cylinder. They disassembled, repaired, made two new keys and programmed key fobs - all for the original quote."
