How Ford Transit Keys Have Changed
1st Generation (VH)
Ford brought the Transit to North America with a remote head key and the PATS SecuriLock immobilizer system. Your key has an ID47 transponder chip inside, a standard blade, and three buttons for lock, unlock, and panic. We program it through the OBD-II port under your dash, no dealer visit needed.
2nd Generation (Facelift 1)
Ford stepped things up here with a transition period. Most 2020 to 2022 Transits still use the same remote head key with an ID47 chip, but some higher trim models introduced a proximity smart key. We verify by VIN before we roll out so we bring the right blank. Programming is still OBD-II based, and some configurations support on-board methods.
3rd Generation (Facelift 2)
This is where the Transit got serious about security. Your 2023 to 2025 Transit uses a smart key with push-button start, an ID47 chip, and a high-security blade for emergency access. The PEPS/SecuriLock system requires OBD-II programming with server authentication on some procedures, which means we need the right tools and online access. We handle it on-site in Simi Valley, Camarillo, wherever you are.
4th Generation (A350/Next Gen)
Ford rebuilt the Transit on the A350 platform with a fully electronic PEPS system and no physical blade at all. The 2026 uses an ID47 smart key with push-button start across every trim. Here is the honest part: this one currently requires dealer server authentication for programming. We will tell you that upfront before we waste your time or money.
Which Key Does Your Transit Use?
A traditional key with buttons built into the head. You turn it in the ignition to start and press the buttons for lock, unlock, and panic.
Most 2020 to 2022 Transits use the same remote head key as earlier models. Some higher trims got a proximity smart key. We check your VIN to confirm which one you have.
A proximity fob that stays in your pocket. The van detects it when you walk up and lets you start with a button press. There is a hidden high-security blade inside for emergencies.
Fully electronic smart key with no physical blade. Push-button start is standard on every 2026 Transit. This generation currently requires dealer programming.

Common Ford Transit Key Problems
PATS Malfunction After Battery Replacement
The BCM on 2015-2022 Transits is sensitive to power interruptions. Disconnect the battery and PATS loses sync with your transponder, locking you out. We reprogram your existing key through OBD-II, usually in about 20 minutes.
Key Fob Battery Drain
Transit fob dies fast, especially on commercial vans with heavy daily use. Swap the CR2032 positive up; if it dies again in two weeks the fob board needs replacing. Common across all Transit years.
Tibbe Blade Wear
Tibbe-style blades on 2015-2023 Transits wear fast in commercial use, dozens of in-and-outs a day. We cut a fresh blade from the original code, not a copy of a copy, so it works like new.
PEPS Antenna Failure
Check the antenna ring around push-button start first on 2023-2026 smart key Transits. Proximity detection fails from a bad antenna in the column or door handles. Fresh battery, fob ignored? Likely the antenna; we diagnose on-site, software or hardware.
Can You Program a Transit Key Yourself?
If you already have two working keys, you can program a third one yourself using Ford's PATS two-key procedure. You cycle the ignition with each existing key in a specific timed sequence, then insert the new key. This only works for adding a key; if you have lost all keys, you need professional equipment.
No DIY option here. The 2017 to 2019 Transit requires OBD-II diagnostic tools and PIN extraction for any key programming. Call us at (805) 790-8162 and we handle it on-site.
The 2020 to 2022 Transit uses advanced PATS with no on-board self-programming for new keys. We use Autel IM608 or VVDI Key Tool Plus with NASTF PIN retrieval to program your key through the OBD-II port.
The PEPS/SecuriLock system on these years requires professional tools and server authentication. No DIY path exists. We carry the tools and subscriptions to handle this on-site.
The 2026 Transit currently requires Ford dealer server authentication for key programming. We cannot do this one on-site, and we will tell you that upfront before we roll out.

Did You Know?
Back in the 1980s, Ford developed the Tibbe key system for its European models as a high-security alternative to standard pin tumbler locks. When the Transit finally came to North America in 2015, it brought that same Tibbe blade design across the Atlantic. It was the first time most American locksmiths had to learn a key cutting method that had been standard in Europe for over three decades.
