How Transit Connect Keys Changed Over the Years
1st Generation (VA)
A remote head key with a Texas 4D63 transponder chip and a standard cut blade. You turn this key in the ignition like a normal car key, but the PATS immobilizer reads the chip before it lets the engine fire. Three buttons for lock, unlock, and trunk. Battery is a CR2032, and the whole system is straightforward compared to what came later.
1st Generation Facelift (VA)
A remote head key that looks and works almost identically to the 2010 to 2013 version. Same Texas 4D63 chip, same standard blade, same PATS immobilizer. Ford kept the security architecture the same here, so programming is handled the same way. If you have two working keys, you can even add a third yourself.
2nd Generation (GB)
This is where security got serious. Ford moved to the V408 platform with PATS II, using either a Texas 4D63 or ID47 HITAG Pro chip depending on the sub-year. You might have a flip key or a smart key with push-button start, and the blade switched to high-security. Programming requires OBD-II tools or server authentication, so this is not a DIY job without two existing keys.
2nd Generation Facelift (GB)
A smart key with an ID47 chip, laser-cut blade, and push-button start across the board. PATS II with advanced encryption means programming needs OBD-II access and sometimes dealer server authorization. We handle most of these on-site with our Autel IM608, but some all-keys-lost scenarios on the newest years may need dealer server access. We will tell you that upfront before we roll out.
Which Key Does Your Transit Connect Use?
A traditional key with buttons built into the head. You insert it into the ignition to start the van. The transponder chip inside talks to your PATS system every time you turn the key.
Same style as the earlier generation. Standard blade, three buttons, CR2032 battery. If your fob shell is cracked or worn, we can transfer the internals to a new shell on-site.
Depending on your trim level, you either have a flip key with a folding blade or a smart proximity fob with push-button start. The high-security blade requires specialized cutting equipment.
A proximity smart key that stays in your pocket. Push the button to start. There is a hidden emergency blade inside for when the battery dies. Laser-cut blade means no hardware store copies.

Common Transit Connect Key Problems
All-Keys-Lost Programming
All-keys-lost on a 2010-2017 Transit Connect needs professional tools: Ford PATS requires two programmed keys for on-board programming. We bring the Autel IM608 to your driveway in Camarillo or Thousand Oaks and run the full procedure on-site.
Remote Fob Sync Loss
Ford's fob procedure resets every remote tied to the van: program a new fob and skip the others and all your existing remotes go dead. We reprogram every fob you own in one visit so nothing gets left behind.
Immobilizer No-Crank
First thing we check is the PATS theft light. Solid or fast flash means the immobilizer is not reading the chip. Common on 2010-2014 from an unprogrammed transponder or a key-to-PCM comms failure. We pull PATS codes on-site to pin key, module, or wiring.
Can You Program a Transit Connect Key Yourself?
If you already have two working keys, you can program a third yourself using Ford's on-board PATS procedure. Cycle the first key on and off, then the second within 10 seconds, then insert the new cut key. Timing is critical, and cloned keys will not work.
Same two-key method as the earlier generation. You need two existing programmed keys and a properly cut new blank with the correct Texas 4D63 chip. If you only have one key or zero keys, you need professional OBD-II tools.
Two-key self-programming still works on this generation if you have two existing keys. But the high-security blade needs professional cutting, and smart key versions with push-button start require advanced tools for full programming. Remote programming is a separate step.
Smart key models can use Ford's cupholder programming method with two existing fobs. Place each programmed fob in the cupholder, press the start button, then swap in the new fob. Without two working fobs, you need OBD-II programming or dealer server access. Call us at (805) 790-8162 and we will tell you exactly what your year needs.

Did You Know?
The 2010 Ford Transit Connect was Ford's first European Transit model imported to North America, bringing the PATS immobilizer with on-board key programming that was unique to early commercial vans. Ford basically took a workhorse that had been running European streets for years and dropped it into the American market almost overnight. A minivan in a cargo van's clothing.
