2017 Ford Transit Connect
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long will the replacement key last?

A properly programmed key with a quality shell and a fresh battery should last the life of the vehicle. The programming itself doesn't degrade or expire. What actually wears out over time on these fobs is the rubber button pad -- the locks and unlock buttons take the most abuse and eventually lose their tactile response. That's a shell swap, not a reprogram.

Q: What if the new key stops working after a few weeks?

Call us. The work is covered. That said, when a properly programmed key starts acting up shortly after, the vehicle is usually where I'd look first. A weak fuse, a low vehicle battery, or a software state in the immobilizer can all produce a key-not-detected warning that has nothing to do with the fob itself. Transit Connect owners on the forums have tracked intermittent no-start and warning light issues back to the vehicle's own electrical system rather than the key.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can you just program it to my Transit Connect?

Bring it and we'll check it. The honest answer is: sometimes yes, sometimes no. The fob has to match the factory FCC ID for your vehicle. If it does and it's a clean, unprogrammed blank, there's a good chance we can work with it. If it's been previously paired to another vehicle, or if it's the wrong configuration entirely, programming won't take -- and no tool will force it. That's a common way owners end up buying twice.

Q: Can I program a second key to my Transit Connect myself at home?

Not on this one. The 2017 Transit Connect remote head key requires a professional scan tool connected to the OBD port to register a new key to the vehicle. There's no ignition-turn sequence or button trick that works here. That type of onboard self-programming is for older systems. This vehicle needs diagnostic equipment to write the new key into the security system.

2017 Ford Transit Connect Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was already on the Eastside of Santa Barbara finishing another job when a message came in. A woman at a veterinary office nearby needed a spare key for her Transit Connect. She'd texted me the VIN before I even replied.

That VIN tells me everything I need before I leave. I had the correct blank for her 4-button remote head key pulled and ready in the van on the drive over. No guessing when I arrived, no waiting while I sorted inventory on the curb.

She met me in the parking lot with her ID and her working key in hand. She'd done everything right. Because she had a working key present, I went straight to cutting and programming -- no lock decoding, no extra steps. Clean job.

The whole thing from the time I parked to handing her a tested, working spare took under twenty minutes. She was back inside with her dog before the appointment wrapped up.

I mentioned what the dealer would have charged for the same key. She looked at me for a second, said "really," and went back inside. The dealer comparison is almost never the point of the story. The twenty minutes is.

Ford Transit Connect Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on Ford vehicles?▼

We use fresh blanks that match the factory FCC ID and configuration for your specific vehicle. That part matters more than people realize. Ford forum threads are full of owners who bought a fob online -- sometimes even a genuine-looking refurbished one -- and then ran into programming problems that had nothing to do with the locksmith or the dealer. The blank itself was the issue. We start with verified, quality blanks on every job.
