A Transit Connect owner over on the Westside neighborhood in Santa Barbara needed a spare key before a Monday morning delivery run. She was sitting in her driveway when I pulled up. Had the VIN texted to me an hour before I left, her registration on the dash, and her one working key sitting on the seat.
That VIN told me everything on the drive over. Second-generation Transit Connect, PATS with the 80-bit 4D63 chip, remote head key 164-R8046, four buttons. I had the blank pulled and ready before I parked.
She had a working key present, so this was an add-a-key job. I connected my programmer through the OBD-II port, read the PATS module, and wrote the new transponder. Then I cut the blade to match her existing key. No lock decode needed because the original was right there.
While I tested the new key, she told me she'd called the dealer first. They quoted her a week-and-a-half wait just for the appointment, plus the tow to get it there since they wouldn't come to her. She said she almost just kept driving on the one key.
I ran both keys through the full cycle: remote lock, remote unlock, panic, trunk release, ignition start, ignition off. Both clean. Eighteen minutes, driveway to done.
She put the spare in her kitchen drawer and went back to loading the van.
