How Ford Edge Keys Changed Over the Years
1st Gen (U387): Remote Head Key
On-board programming makes this one straightforward. Your Edge uses a Texas 4D63 transponder chip inside a remote head key with a standard blade. It runs Ford's PATS immobilizer, which means the key has to talk to the car before the engine will start. Three buttons on the head for lock, unlock, and trunk, and a CR2032 battery keeps the remote side alive.
2nd Gen (CD4): Flip Key
Ford upgraded to an ID47 chip and a high-security HU101 blade for this generation. Programming requires OBD-II access, meaning we plug into the diagnostic port under your dash and write the key to the PATS system electronically. The flip key design tucks the blade into the fob body, and it still uses a CR2032 battery. No push-button start on these; you still turn the key.
2nd Gen Facelift (CD4): Smart Key
This is where things got serious. Ford moved to an ID49 chip with SecuriLock and server-based authentication, which means the car has to verify the new key through Ford's servers during programming. Your Edge now has push-button start and a laser-cut emergency blade tucked inside the fob. We handle these with Xhorse VVDI and token-based server access, so you skip the dealer entirely.
Which Key Does Your Ford Edge Use?
A traditional metal key with remote buttons built into the head. You insert it into the ignition and turn it to start. The transponder chip inside is what lets the car recognize it.
The blade folds into the fob body and flips out when you press a release button. It uses a high-security cut that is harder to duplicate at a hardware store, which is the point.
This one stays in your pocket. Walk up, grab the handle, press the button on the dash, and go. There is a laser-cut emergency blade hidden inside the fob for dead battery situations.
What Your Ford Edge Key Costs
Every price includes the key blank, cutting, programming, and testing on-site; no hidden fees.
EZ Car Keyz vs. the Dealer
We warranty every key we program. The difference is you do not wait three days and pay double to get it.
Common Ford Edge Key Problems
PATS Transponder Failure
2007-2014 Edge cranks but will not fire and the starter gets blamed. Nine times out of ten it is the PATS transponder or the antenna ring around the ignition. We test both first; dead chip means a fresh key programmed on the spot.
Key Fob Battery Drain
First thing we check on a 2015-2024 Edge with a fob that keeps dying: the battery contacts inside the housing. Corroded or bent contacts kill a fresh CR2032 in weeks. We clean the contacts, replace the cell, and test signal strength before we leave.
Blade Wear on HU101
The HU101 high-security blade on 2015-2024 Edges wears faster than owners expect. Cuts are precise and shallow, so even small wear stops the blade turning the cylinder or engaging the wafers. We recut to factory spec or cut a fresh blade from your VIN.
PCM Programming Lockout
Battery disconnected or a module swapped on your 2007-2018 Edge and now no keys work? PCM programming lockout: PATS lost sync with the PCM and needs a full reflash. We see this constantly after shop repairs in Simi Valley and Camarillo and reflash on-site.
Can You Program a Ford Edge Key Yourself?
You can program the remote (lock, unlock, trunk buttons) yourself using a door cylinder cycle method. But the transponder chip that actually starts the car requires professional equipment. So you can pair a new remote at home, but you still need us for the key itself.
No DIY option here. The ID47 chip and PATS system on these years require OBD-II programming with professional scan tools. There is no on-board procedure for the remote or the transponder.
If you already have two programmed smart keys, you can add a third using the backup slot in the center console. But if you are down to one key or zero keys, you need professional programming with server authentication. Call us at (805) 790-8162 and we will sort it out.

Did You Know?
Back in 2007, Ford made an interesting engineering choice with the first Edge. Its PATS system was one of the earliest widespread uses of Texas Instruments Crypto transponders in a crossover SUV. That technology, originally developed for high-security applications, trickled down from Ford's truck line and helped shape the keyless entry and immobilizer systems that most modern crossovers use today.
