Got a call from a woman near Carpinteria Creek Park. Her 2016 Edge was sitting in the lot and she had zero working keys. One got washed in a jeans pocket, the other had been missing for months.

I drove out with the smart key blank and my programmer. The 2016 Edge runs Ford's second-generation PATS on the CD4 platform, same module used across the Edge, Fusion, and Lincoln MKX of that era. All-keys-lost means a full security reset through the OBD-II port. The system enforces a 10-minute security countdown before it accepts the first new key code. That part you just wait through. Nothing speeds it up.
While the timer ran, she asked me how the car knows the new key is real. I showed her the proximity antenna loop near the steering column and explained the 128-bit challenge-response between the fob and the body control module (BCM, module 7A on Ford's network). The car sends a random challenge, the fob's PCF7953 chip answers with the right encrypted response, and the immobilizer releases the starter.
Cut the HU101 emergency blade, programmed the M3N-A2C31243300, tested every button. Lock, unlock, trunk, remote start, push-button start. All confirmed. She was back driving before the parking meter would have run out, for a fraction of what Ford wanted.
