I got a call from a woman parked in the Via Real Corridor, right off the 101. She'd been sitting in the lot for about twenty minutes before she called. The 2016 Edge had given her a key-not-detected warning, and then the push-button start just stopped responding entirely. She said she'd been having small issues for a week, short range, had to hold the fob close to the start button, but chalked it up to the car being old.
She had the original fob and one spare she'd bought from a third-party seller months ago. The spare had never quite worked right either, and now she was wondering if there was something wrong with the car itself.
I drove out and met her there. Pulled the original fob apart first. Both CR2025 cells were in there, which surprised her because she didn't know this fob took two. She'd only ever changed one of them. The second battery was the original from the factory, still reading some voltage on the meter but not enough to do the job reliably under load.
Swapped both cells, reseated the contacts, and the original fob came back strong. Push-button start, door handles, all of it. Then I looked at the spare fob. The factory FCC ID on the back didn't match. Similar shape, wrong variant. That one would have needed to be replaced with the correct unit and then programmed through the diagnostic port.
She didn't need the spare that day, so we left it there. The whole thing took about fifteen minutes, done in the same spot she'd been stuck. She said the dealer had told her on the phone it would be a diagnostic appointment just to look at it.
