How Ford Freestyle Keys Changed Over the Years
First Generation (D2XX)
Your 2005 or 2006 Freestyle uses a 3-button remote head key with a standard blade and Ford's PATS immobilizer system. The transponder chip talks to the PATS module every time you turn the ignition, so a plain metal copy from the hardware store will not start the car. On-board programming is available if you already have two working keys, which keeps things simple and affordable.
First Generation (D2XX), Final Year
Your 2007 Freestyle carries the same 3-button remote head key and PATS immobilizer as the earlier models. Ford kept the system consistent for the final model year, so parts and programming are identical. Same standard blade, same on-board programming method if you have two working keys.
Which Key Does Your Freestyle Use?
This is a single piece: your key blade and remote buttons are built into one unit. The transponder chip inside the key head is what lets the car start, not just the metal blade.
Same remote head key as the 2005-2006 models. Three buttons on the head, standard blade, and a PATS transponder chip embedded inside. Functionally identical to the earlier years.
The Real Cost of a Freestyle Key
Every price includes the key blank, cutting, transponder programming, remote programming, and on-site testing.

Common Freestyle Key Problems
Timing Errors in Fob Programming
Did you finish all eight ignition cycles inside the time window? The Freestyle gives about eight seconds for OFF-to-RUN, eight times. If the door cylinders did not cycle to confirm, the timing was off. Try with a quicker rhythm, or call (805) 790-8162.
Faulty Fob Battery
A new fob from Amazon does not guarantee a fresh CR2032. Cheap cells sit in warehouses for years and arrive half dead. If the new fob will not program and your ignition timing was clean, swap the battery first before troubleshooting anything else.
Incompatible Fob Frequency
Freestyle buttons will not respond at all and the fob looks broken: usually a frequency mismatch. The 2005-2007 Freestyle uses 34.4 MHz fobs. A replacement on a different frequency will never pair, no matter how many programming attempts.
BCM Relay Issues
A faulty BCM relay can stop the Freestyle entering programming mode. Less common than timing or battery, but when it fails no amount of cycling triggers door confirmation. Common on higher-mileage Simi Valley and Oxnard vans; we test on-site.
Can You Program a Freestyle Key Yourself?
Yes, you can program the remote lock, unlock, and panic buttons yourself using an ignition cycle procedure. No tools needed. But this only programs the remote functions. The transponder chip that actually starts the car requires professional PATS programming.
If you already have two working programmed keys, you can add a third key yourself using Ford's two-key on-board procedure. You cycle through both existing keys and then insert the new one within a tight time window. The security light will illuminate for three seconds to confirm success. Cloned keys from hardware stores like Ace or Home Depot will not work for this.
If you have zero or only one working key, you cannot program a new transponder key yourself. You need professional equipment to extract the PATS security code and write the new key to the system. That is exactly what we do on-site. Call (805) 790-8162.

Did You Know?
You would not guess it, but your Ford Freestyle's key fob can be programmed DIY-style with just eight ignition cycles. No scan tool, no computer, no special equipment. Ford built the remote programming procedure right into the car's software, which was unusual for mid-2000s vehicles. Most competitors required a dealer visit or aftermarket tool just to pair a replacement remote.
