How Ford Taurus Keys Changed Over the Years
Third Generation (DN101)
On-board programming makes this one straightforward. Your Taurus uses a simple transponder key with a Texas 4C chip and Ford's early PATS system. No remote buttons, no battery, just a metal key with a chip inside that talks to the ignition. If you have two working keys, you can even add a third yourself using the two-key procedure.
Fourth Generation (D250)
OBD-II programming keeps things simple here, and the two-key self-programming trick still works on this generation. Ford upgraded to a remote head key with three buttons, a Texas 4D63 transponder chip, and a CR2032 battery for the remote. You get lock, unlock, and trunk buttons built right into the key head, so no more carrying a separate fob.
Fifth Generation (D339)
This is where self-programming disappears. Your 2008 or 2009 Taurus still uses a remote head key with three buttons and a Texas 4D chip, but Ford locked out the on-board programming procedure. You need professional OBD-II tools to add or replace keys, which is exactly what we bring to your driveway.
Sixth Generation
Ford made a big jump here with proximity smart keys and push-button start. Your key uses a Texas 4D63 (80-bit) chip with a laser-cut emergency blade tucked inside the fob. Programming requires OBD-II access and sometimes Ford server authentication, so this is strictly a professional job. The dealer wants serious money for these; we do it for a lot less.
Seventh Generation
Server authentication is mandatory on these. Your Taurus uses a smart proximity key with a Texas Crypto chip, laser-cut blade, and Ford's most advanced PATS encryption. Every new key has to be verified through Ford's server before it will start your car. We handle the server connection on-site with our Autel IM608, no tow to the dealer required.
Which Key Does Your Taurus Use?
A plain metal key with a hidden chip inside the plastic head. No buttons, no battery. It looks simple but your car will not start without the right transponder programmed to it.
Your lock, unlock, and trunk buttons are built into the key head. The transponder chip is inside too, so this one key does everything.
Same style as the 2000-2007 key with three buttons and a standard blade, but the programming method changed. You need professional tools to add keys to these years.
A fob that stays in your pocket. Walk up, grab the handle, push the button, and go. There is a hidden laser-cut emergency blade inside if the fob battery dies.
Same proximity style as the 2010-2015 but with stronger encryption. Programming requires Ford server authentication, which we handle on-site.
Pricing by Generation

Common Ford Taurus Key Problems
PATS Transponder Sync Loss
Dead battery did not kill your key. After a battery swap or jump, the PATS immobilizer can lose sync with the transponder, theft light flashing. We reprogram existing keys via OBD-II. Common on 1996-2007 models, weekly calls in Oxnard and Simi Valley.
SHO V8 Camshaft Failures
Before any key work on a 1996-1999 SHO, we check the 3.4L V8 health: these are notorious for camshaft failures. A key job matters less if the motor has bigger problems. Key issue? Fixed on the spot. Mechanical? We tell you before you spend a dime.
Key Fob Battery Drain
Your 2008-2019 Taurus fob keeps dying inside weeks. A constant draw from the fob's internal circuit or corroded contacts kills the CR2032 fast. We test the draw on-site and tell you if a fresh battery fixes it or if you need a replacement fob.
Immobilizer Module Faults
Crank, no fire, solid theft light. On high-mileage 2010-2019 Tauruses the PATS module itself fails. Replacing the key will not help. We read the module with Autel IM608 to confirm; if it needs EEPROM work we handle it, if it is something else we tell you.
Can You Program a Taurus Key Yourself?
Yes, if you have two working keys. Insert the first key, turn to ON for one second, turn off, remove. Insert the second key within five seconds, same thing. Then insert the new key within ten seconds and wait for the theft light to go out. Timing is critical. If you only have one key or zero keys, call us.
Same two-key procedure works here. You need two programmed keys already in hand to add a third. The process takes about a minute if you nail the timing. No keys? That is an all-keys-lost job and you need professional OBD-II tools.
No self-programming on these years. Ford disabled the on-board procedure starting with the 2008 model. You need a locksmith with OBD-II programming tools. We carry everything needed on every call.
Not possible at home. These smart keys require professional programming through OBD-II, and some trims need Ford server authentication. We handle both on-site.
No DIY option exists. Every new key must be authenticated through Ford's server. We connect on-site with our tools and complete the server handshake in your driveway.
