2008 Ford Taurus
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long will the replacement key last?

Years, realistically. The enrollment to the vehicle's security system doesn't degrade or expire. What actually wears out over time is the rubber button pad, the key blade near the bow if it gets used as a bottle opener or a pry tool, and eventually the battery. We put a fresh CR2032 in every key we make. After that, a CR2032 swap every few years is typically all the maintenance this key needs.

Q: What if the new key stops working a few weeks after you make it?

Call us. Our work is covered. That said, when a properly enrolled key fails after a short time, the cause is usually the vehicle side, not the key. A few things that actually show up on these: a weak connection at the transponder antenna ring around the ignition cylinder, a fuse issue affecting the remote receiver, or in rarer cases the vehicle's security system getting into a lockout state after repeated failed start attempts.

Q: My 2008 Taurus shows a key-not-detected warning but the key worked fine yesterday. What's going on?

A few possibilities. First and easiest: the CR2032 is low. A weak battery can cause intermittent remote failures and, on some configurations, affect how the vehicle reads the key at startup. Swap the battery before assuming anything else is wrong. If a fresh battery doesn't clear it, the next suspect is the transponder antenna ring, the small coil that sits around the ignition cylinder. It reads the chip in your key every time you turn the ignition.

Q: I lost both keys to my 2008 Taurus. Can you still make a key without one to copy from?

Yes. All-keys-lost is a standard job. It takes longer than adding a spare to a working key, because without an existing enrolled key present, the security system has to be accessed through the diagnostic port to clear the old key records and register the new ones. The key blade gets cut from your VIN or by decoding your lock. Have your VIN and a valid ID showing ownership ready when I arrive.

2008 Ford Taurus Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A woman in the Matilija area of Ojai called about a spare key for her 2008 Taurus. Her husband had the only working key, she was tired of coordinating around it, and she wanted a copy made while he was at work. Smart move.

She texted me the VIN before I left. That's the part that people skip and then wonder why the job takes longer. With that VIN in hand, I had the right blank pulled and confirmed before I even turned onto her street.

When I arrived she met me in the driveway. Working key in hand, ID ready. She had done exactly what I would have told her to do if she'd asked. The remote head key for this generation Taurus is a single unit, so I cut the blade to match, then enrolled the new key to the vehicle's security system using her existing key as the reference. Tested the remote, tested the start, walked her through the button functions.

Start to finish, maybe 22 minutes. She had a spare before her husband got home, and she paid a fraction of what the dealer quoted her the last time she looked into it. That quote had been sitting in her head for months. She just needed someone to actually show up.

Ford Taurus Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys for the 2008 Ford Taurus?▼

We use fresh blanks that are built to the factory spec for this key, meaning the correct blade profile, the correct transponder, and the correct remote frequency for your fob's functions. The factory FCC ID on the fob is a useful reference point for matching hardware, and we verify that before cutting anything.
