2014 Ford Taurus
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long will a replacement key last on a 2014 Taurus?

A properly programmed fob with a quality housing and a fresh battery should work for years. The immobilizer registration itself does not degrade or expire over time. Most of the failures people run into down the road are worn button pads or a dead CR2032, not anything wrong with the programming. We install a fresh battery with every key we make, and we use housings built to handle real daily use, not the kind that crack after a few drops.

Q: What if the new key stops working a few weeks after you programmed it?

Call us. The warranty covers it. That said, when a freshly programmed key on a 2014 Taurus starts acting up weeks later, the fob itself is rarely the culprit. Forum threads on this generation point to a few recurring causes: a blown fuse in the body control circuit, a low or improperly seated battery giving intermittent no-detect warnings, or in rarer cases a vehicle-side software issue that needs to be cleared with diagnostic equipment.

Q: I only have one key left for my 2014 Taurus. Should I get a spare made before something goes wrong?

Yes, and sooner rather than later. Here is the part that catches people off guard: if you wait until the one key you have stops working, you are now in an all-keys-lost situation. That is a longer job, costs more, and requires the immobilizer to be fully reset before any new fob can be registered. Getting a second key made while you still have a working one is a much simpler process.

Q: The keyless entry on my 2014 Taurus works from across the parking lot but push-button start only detects the fob when I hold it right up to the dash. Is the fob failing?

That specific symptom, good range for door functions but weak range for the start button, points to the CR2032 running low before it fully dies. The remote entry function and the proximity detection for push-button start draw on the battery differently, and start detection tends to drop out first. Swap the battery before assuming anything else is wrong.

2014 Ford Taurus Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was parked near the Historic District in Oxnard on a Monday afternoon when a guy called me from the daycare lot a few blocks away. His 2014 Taurus needed a new smart key and he had already gotten the dealer's answer: Thursday, possibly Friday, and bring the car in on a flatbed if it wasn't starting reliably.

He had a toddler, one vehicle, and zero margin for three days of nothing.

I drove to the lot. He was standing by the car with the kid on his hip, looking at his phone like the schedule might magically clear up.

I connected my programmer to the OBD port, ran the Ford smart key sequence, and started the registration. The process has a timed countdown built into it, so there is a stretch where you just wait and let it run. I used that time to cut the blade on the replacement fob so it matched his door and ignition. Fresh CR2032 in the housing, contacts cleaned, everything seated correctly before it went into service.

When the sequence finished I walked every function: door lock, unlock, the emergency insert in the door cylinder, and confirmed the push-button start saw the fob at normal range. All good.

He buckled the kid in and drove off before 4:30. The dealer would have had him waiting until Thursday. He paid a fraction of what they quoted, and that was the whole story.

Ford Taurus Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on Ford vehicles?▼

We start with fresh, verified blanks built to OEM spec, matched to the factory FCC ID and frequency for your exact vehicle. This matters more than it sounds. Ford owners on forums have documented cases where a fob sourced from a third-party seller unlocked the doors fine but would not register to the immobilizer during programming, because the internal hardware was not a true match.
