All-keys-lost programming on Enclave, Encore, Envision, LaCrosse, and Regal platforms uses a timed 30-minute security cycle or OBD-II BCM access to generate and pair new keys without an existing working key. It depends on the year and model. Buicks built before 1996 used standard metal keys with no chip. From 1997 through roughly 2009, most models used transponder chip keys, sometimes with an integrated remote fob. Models from 2010 through 2013 often use a sidewinder flip key with a laser-cut blade that folds into the fob. From 2014 onward, most Buicks use a full proximity smart key with push-button start. If your Buick has a Start/Stop button where the ignition used to be, you have the smart key system.

Start by replacing the CR2032 battery in the fob, which takes about 30 seconds and does not require reprogramming afterward. If the battery is good, the backup start method is your next step, but the location of the backup fob pocket varies significantly by model. On the 2012 Verano it is under the cupholder in the center console. On the 2014 and newer LaCrosse it is inside the armrest storage area. On the Encore GX and Envista it is a depression at the rear of the center console tray. Place the fob there with buttons facing up, press the brake firmly, and push Start. Older Buick models from the 1990s through the mid-2000s using GM's Passlock and VATS theft deterrent systems have a known issue where the Hall effect sensor in the ignition tumbler fails, causing the security light to flash and preventing the engine from starting even with a correct key. This is not a theft deterrent doing its job, it is a failed sensor being misread as a threat. Buick models from 2010 onward with passive keyless entry share the same relay attack vulnerability that affects most luxury and near-luxury brands in that era. Thieves can use signal amplifiers to extend the proximity signal from a fob stored inside your home and trick the vehicle into unlocking. This is not specific to Buick but it is worth knowing. Storing your fob in a Faraday pouch when at home completely blocks the signal. Older Buick models using VATS or Passlock are not vulnerable to relay attacks since those systems have no proximity component.
