Riviera Key Systems by Generation
8th Generation
This is where GM's security started getting real for the Riviera. Your key uses a PASS-Key II immobilizer with a resistor pellet built into the key shank that the ignition cylinder reads mechanically. The remote is a 4-button fob (FCC KOBUT1BT) that handles lock, unlock, trunk, and panic, and we program it on-board without needing any dealer PIN.
8th Generation Refresh
Same PASS-Key II system and resistor pellet as the earlier cars, so the security architecture did not change. What did change is the remote now supports memory seat and mirror programming through the unlock button, which is a nice touch for a personal luxury coupe. Programming is still on-board, still straightforward, and we handle the whole thing in your driveway.
Which Key Does Your Riviera Use?
A standard blade transponder key with a built-in resistor pellet and a separate 4-button remote fob. The key starts the car, the fob handles your locks and trunk.
Same key and fob setup as the earlier Riviera, but the unlock button also controls your memory seat and mirror positions. Handy if two people share the car.

Common Riviera Key Problems
MALL Module Capacitor Failure
A damaged capacitor in the MALL module is the root of weird symptoms on these cars. Key-in-ignition chime goes silent, seat belt warning disappears, interior lights act up, power door cylinders stop. Covered under NHTSA recall 95V204000.
PASS-Key II Transponder Sync Loss
First check on a no-start Riviera is the security light. Flashing? PASS-Key II lost sync with your transponder, usually after a dead battery or module hiccup. The BCM no longer recognizes the resistor pellet. Common in Simi Valley and Oxnard heat.
Remote Key Fob Battery Drain
Fob buttons work Monday, dead by Friday. Owners think the fob is broken, but the KOBUT1BT remote constantly polls for signal, eating CR2032s. Pop the back cover, swap the battery. Keeps happening? The board may need replacing.
Can You Program a Riviera Key Yourself?
You can program the remote fob yourself using the OBD jumper method (pins 4 and 8) or the door unlock hold method. Both are in your owner's manual. But the transponder chip and PASS-Key II resistor pellet require professional on-board programming with a Tech 2 or compatible tool, so call us at (805) 790-8162 for that part.

Did You Know?
The 1996-1999 Riviera's PASS-Key II was one of GM's early transponder systems, using a resistor pellet physically embedded in the key shank alongside the electronic chip. The ignition cylinder had tiny contacts that read the pellet's resistance value before the transponder even came into play. Two layers of security on one key, back when most cars still used plain metal blanks with no electronics at all.
