1999 Buick Riviera
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How do I know which replacement fob is the right one for my 1999 Riviera?

Check the back of your existing fob for the factory FCC ID. That identifier tells you exactly which remote your vehicle was built to accept. If you're buying a replacement, match that number. Getting the wrong remote is a common and frustrating mistake - it won't program no matter what you do. If your original fob is lost and you have nothing to reference, I can look it up by your vehicle's year, make, and model.

Q: How much does a replacement remote for a 1999 Buick Riviera cost through EZ Car Keyz versus the dealer?

Call us for current pricing, but the short version is: way less than the dealer, and I come to you. Dealer pricing on older GM remotes with programming typically runs a good chunk more than what we charge, and you'd have to schedule an appointment and leave the car. With EZ Car Keyz, I drive to Strathearn or wherever you are in Simi Valley and handle it on the spot.

Q: I have two fobs for my 1999 Riviera but one stopped working after I replaced the battery. What happened?

This is actually a known quirk with older GM keyless entry systems from this era. On some of these setups, if you go through a programming sequence with one remote and don't include the second one in that same session, the vehicle drops the second remote from its memory. The system only remembers what was programmed in the most recent session.

Q: My 1999 Riviera remote works for locks but not from very far away anymore. Do I need a new fob?

Not necessarily. Short range on these older GM remotes is almost always the battery before it's the fob itself. Swap the CR2032 first. If range comes back, you're done. If it's still weak after a fresh battery, then it's worth looking at the fob itself or the vehicle's receiver. But nine times out of ten on a remote this age, it's the battery.

1999 Buick Riviera Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy in Strathearn called me on a Saturday morning. He'd bought a replacement fob for his 1999 Riviera online, swapped the CR2032 in himself, and it did nothing. Not weak range, not intermittent. Nothing. He figured the fob he bought was defective and was about to order another one.

I pulled up to his driveway. The fob he'd bought was the right one for his vehicle, and his CR2032 was fresh. The issue was exactly what I see on these older GM remotes pretty regularly: the replacement fob had never been programmed to his car. It's an easy thing to miss when you buy one online - the listing doesn't always make it obvious that pairing is required.

I ran the programming sequence right there in his driveway. Both his original worn fob and the new one got paired at the same time so he'd have a working spare going forward. The whole thing took maybe twenty minutes.

He'd already spent time waiting on shipping for a fob he thought was broken. The actual fix was the programming, not another part.

What battery does the 1999 Buick Riviera key fob use?▼

CR2032. It's one of the more common coin cells out there - you can find it at any auto parts store, pharmacy, or big-box retailer. These older GM remotes don't eat through batteries fast, so one CR2032 usually lasts a couple of years with normal use. When I program a replacement fob, I always drop in a fresh one so you're not starting the clock on a battery of unknown age.
