How Buick Envision Keys Have Changed
1st Generation (C1XX)
Buick stepped into the compact SUV game here with a remote head key running a Texas 4D (ID44T) transponder chip. You turn this key in the ignition like a traditional key, but the chip inside talks to GM's PASS-Key III+ immobilizer before the engine will crank. Higher trims got a proximity fob option, but the base setup is a standard blade key with three buttons and a CR2032 battery.
1st Generation Facelift (C1XX)
This is where security got serious. Buick moved to a smart key with push-button start and upgraded the chip to Texas Crypto (ID46), paired with GM's Enhanced SKIM immobilizer. Programming still happens through OBD-II, but it requires a PIN code and GM-specific software. You cannot DIY the transponder on these.
2nd Generation (C3XX)
A completely new platform with GM's SKIM IV immobilizer and server-based authentication. Your smart key uses an ID46 chip, push-button start is standard, and some trims have no mechanical blade at all. Programming requires a live connection to GM's servers, which means this one takes longer and costs more, but we handle it.
Which Key Does Your Envision Use?
A traditional key with buttons built into the head. You insert it into the ignition to start the car. The transponder chip inside communicates with the immobilizer every time you turn the key.
A proximity fob that stays in your pocket. The car detects it when you walk up and lets you push a button to start. There is a hidden emergency blade inside for dead battery situations.
The newest smart key for the redesigned Envision. Push-button start is standard across the board. Some trims have no physical blade at all, so keeping your fob battery fresh matters even more.
How Much Does a Buick Envision Key Cost?
Every price includes the key blank, cutting, programming, and testing; no hidden fees.

Common Buick Envision Key Problems
Key Fob Battery Drain
The Keyless Open system on your Envision keeps the fob in constant communication with the car, even parked. That eats CR2032s. Replacing every couple months? Store the fob 10 feet from the vehicle overnight.
Transponder Programming Failure
Your 2021+ Envision will not accept a new key unless the programmer has correct GM calibration and the right PIN. Generic tools throw failure codes. We use Autel IM608 with current GM adapters in Simi Valley or Camarillo.
Keyless Start Intermittent
Owners assume a new battery fixes a push-button start that only works sometimes. On the 2024-2025 Envision, the real culprit is usually the antenna module in the steering column, not the fob. We test signal strength first.
Immobilizer Sync Loss
We check BCM sync status first. If your 2017-2020 Envision cranks but will not start after a battery disconnect or failed programming, the BCM and immobilizer lost their handshake. A quick OBD-II resync usually fixes it.
Can You Program a Buick Envision Key Yourself?
You can add remote keyless entry functions using GM's 10-minute relearn procedure if you have at least one working key. This programs the lock, unlock, and panic buttons only. It does not program the transponder chip, so a brand new key still needs professional OBD-II programming to actually start the car.
No DIY option here. The Enhanced SKIM immobilizer on your 2021-2023 Envision requires professional diagnostic equipment and a PIN code to program any new key. Call us at (805) 790-8162 and we will handle it on-site.
The 2024-2025 Envision requires a live connection to GM's servers for key programming. No onboard procedure exists. This one takes a bit longer than older models, but we come equipped for it.

Did You Know?
You would not guess it, but the Buick Envision shares its platform with the Chinese-market Buick Envision S. Despite the shared bones, the North American version uses GM's PASS-Key immobilizer system, which actually evolved from technology originally developed for Cadillac. So your Envision's security system has some luxury DNA in its family tree.
