How GMC Terrain Key Systems Evolved
1st Gen: Flip Key with Passlock/PK3
On-board programming makes this one straightforward. Your 2010 through 2017 Terrain uses a 4-button flip key (FCC OHT01060512) with a Passlock or PK3 immobilizer system. The blade is a standard cut, the battery is a CR2032, and if you have two working keys you can even add a new one yourself using the ignition cycle method.
2nd Gen: Smart Key with Push-Button Start
This is where things got more serious. GMC moved to a proximity smart key with a PCF7937E chip, push-button start, and Keyless Open. Programming requires OBD-II plus server authentication, which means no DIY option for 2018 through 2020 models. The FCC ID is HYQ1AA, the blade is high security, and the battery is still a CR2032.
2nd Gen Refresh: Same Smart System, Updated Styling
GMC kept the same PCF7937E chip and HYQ1AA smart key for the refresh. Push-button start, Keyless Open, high security blade, CR2032 battery. Server authentication is still required for programming, so this is a professional-tools-only job. The good news: we handle it on-site with the same equipment the dealer uses.
Which Key Does Your Terrain Use?
A folding key with lock, unlock, trunk, and remote start buttons. The blade flips out of the fob and goes into your ignition like a traditional key.
A proximity fob that stays in your pocket. Your Terrain detects it when you walk up and lets you start with the push button. There is a hidden emergency blade inside for dead battery situations.
Same proximity smart key as the 2018 through 2022 models. Push-button start, passive entry, and a hidden high security blade tucked inside the fob.
What to Expect Price-Wise
Price includes the key blank, cutting, programming, and testing; lockouts run $95 to $125.

Common GMC Terrain Key Problems
Key Fob Battery Drain
People think the smart key is dying when the real culprit is a faulty proximity sensor in the vehicle. If your 2018+ Terrain keeps killing fob batteries every few weeks, the fob is probably fine. We test the vehicle's sensor system before you spend on parts.
Ignition Switch Cylinder Wear
On a 2010-2017 Terrain that won't start, we check the ignition cylinder first. These wear out and stop reading your transponder properly. NHTSA 18V661000 was a recall on this; if yours hasn't been addressed, the fix might be free through GMC.
Transponder Signal Failure
The antenna ring around ignition or push-button module reads transponder. When the antenna weakens or the chip degrades, the immobilizer won't recognize the key and the engine won't start. Affects 2010-2024 generations. We diagnose in Simi Valley or Camarillo.
Remote Start Malfunction
Remote start does nothing. Nine times out of ten people blame the fob, but on the Terrain the most common cause is the hood latch sensor not making proper contact. A weak fob signal at edge of range can also be it. We test both before recommending.
Can You Program a Terrain Key Yourself?
Yes. If you have two working keys, you can use GM's on-board relearn procedure through the ignition cycle method to add a new key. If all keys are lost, you can still program a transponder using the 10-minute relearn cycle, but it takes about 30 minutes and the timing has to be exact. Remote functions need at least one existing key.
No DIY option here. The 2018 through 2020 Terrain requires professional OBD-II tools with server authentication. There is no on-board method available for these years. Call us at (805) 790-8162 and we handle it mobile.
You can add remote functions if you have two working keys using GM's cupholder learn method. If you have fewer than two keys, there is a 30-minute procedure that erases all old remotes and lets you start fresh. But this only programs the remote, not the transponder. Full programming still requires professional tools.
