2011 GMC Terrain
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

2011 GMC Terrain Remote Flip Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

In the Samarkand neighborhood of Santa Barbara, a mechanic called me from the parking lot of an auto parts store on his lunch break. He had a 2011 GMC Terrain sitting in his bay that morning, key in hand, car going nowhere. The fob had stopped being recognized. He figured it was an immobilizer issue and he was right.

He called the GMC dealer first. Three days, drop the car, wait for a callback.

He fixes cars for a living. He wasn't doing that.

I pulled into the lot while he was still on lunch. He watched me work, which I always like. Techs ask better questions than most customers. I connected through the OBD port and pulled up the GM key learning menu. The flip key with the factory fob ID checked out physically fine. What we were dealing with was a programming loss, the stored key data had corrupted and the car no longer recognized it as valid.

The enrollment sequence ran. Then we waited on the security access timer. That part is just GM's theft deterrent doing its job, and there is nothing to do but let it count. He leaned against the fender and we talked shop. About twenty minutes from plug-in to confirmed engine start.

He drove back to his shop after lunch, on time.

The dealer quoted more than double what he paid me, plus a three-day hold on his vehicle. A mechanic calling a locksmith is something I see more than people expect. Key programming is a specialty tool situation. Most shop techs don't carry the equipment for it and there's no shame in that.
