A guy commuting out of the Las Positas area of Santa Barbara called me on a weekday evening after his 2016 Terrain left him stranded at a gas station. Eighty miles round trip every day, and the key chose that night to give out.
He had already tried everything he could think of. The fob wasn't responding, and the car wasn't starting. He assumed dead battery, popped the fob open, found the CR2032 looked fine, and was out of moves. The dealer was closed. He needed to be somewhere.
I got there and ran through it on the hood of his car. The battery tested good. The remote circuit was getting power. But the transponder wasn't communicating the way it should, and the car's security system wasn't seeing it as a valid key. The fob shell also had a cracked hinge from years of daily use, so the blade wasn't seating cleanly in the ignition every time, which had probably been slowly making things worse for weeks before this final failure.
I built him a replacement from a fresh blank, programmed it to his vehicle on site, cut the blade to match his ignition, and ran through all five buttons plus several start cycles to confirm everything was talking correctly.
He was back on the freeway in under an hour. The dealer would have been a multi-day wait and a much bigger bill. When you're at a gas station at 6pm on a Wednesday, dealer hours don't matter.
