How GMC Envoy Keys Changed Over the Years
PASSLock I Era
Your first gen Envoy uses a Texas 33 transponder chip and the PASSLock I immobilizer system. There is no remote built into the key; it is a straightforward transponder blade. Programming is done on-board, which means we handle it right at your vehicle without any external server connections.
PASSLock II Upgrade
Your 2002 Envoy stepped up to a Texas 40 chip and the PASSLock II system. This is also when GMC started putting the remote buttons right on the key head, giving you a 3-button remote head key with a CR2032 battery inside. Programming is still on-board, so it is quick work in your driveway.
GMT360 Second Gen
Your second gen Envoy runs an ID44T (Texas 44T) transponder chip with a VATS/PASSLock immobilizer. It is a 3-button remote head key, same CR2032 battery. The difference here is programming now requires an OBD-II scan tool, which means plugging into your vehicle's diagnostic port to communicate with the BCM.
PASS-Key III+ Security
Your late model Envoy uses an ID46 (Philips Crypto 2) chip, but GM upgraded to the PASS-Key III+ immobilizer. You get a 5-button remote head key now. Programming requires OBD-II and sometimes server authentication for PIN retrieval, which adds a step, but we carry the tools and subscriptions to handle it on-site.
Which Key Does Your Envoy Use?
A simple metal key with a transponder chip inside. No remote buttons, no battery to worry about. Just a key that starts your truck.
Your lock, unlock, and panic buttons are built right into the key head. The blade flips or extends from the fob body, and there is a CR2032 battery inside for the remote functions.
Looks similar to the 2002 key with three buttons and a CR2032 battery, but this generation requires OBD-II programming instead of the simpler on-board method.
Five buttons including remote start on some trims. Uses a CR2032 battery. This is the most advanced Envoy key, requiring OBD-II programming with possible server authentication.

Common GMC Envoy Key Problems
PASSLock Failure
We check the ignition lock cylinder sensor first. On high-mileage 1998-2006 Envoys the resistor signal degrades, security light flashes, engine won't crank. We test on-site and relearn or replace the cylinder in 30 minutes in Simi Valley.
Transponder Chip Recognition Loss
People blame the key. Real problem is usually the ignition module losing memory after a battery disconnect. Your 2002-2009 Envoy's module forgets the transponder and needs a relearn. We plug into OBD-II and reprogram chip recognition, no parts in most cases.
Remote Fob Battery Drain
Remote buttons stop working, you swap the CR2032, dead again in a week. Not a battery problem. The fob has an internal short draining power. On 2002-2009 Envoys we often replace the entire remote head key and reprogram rather than throw batteries at a bad fob.
Door Cylinder Actuator Failure
The electric motor inside your door cylinder wears out, driver-side 2005-2009 Envoys. Clicking when you hit lock, or no response. Mechanical actuator issue, not key/fob. We diagnose on-site, but the actuator replacement is a body shop job. We say so upfront.
Can You Program an Envoy Key Yourself?
You can program the remote lock and unlock buttons yourself using a door unlock button procedure with one existing key. But this only programs the remote functions. It does not program the transponder chip that actually starts the engine. For that, you need professional equipment. Call us at (805) 790-8162 and we will handle the transponder programming on-site.

Did You Know?
The GMC Envoy shared its platform with the Chevy TrailBlazer, Buick Rainier, Isuzu Ascender, and even the Saab 9-7X. GM's PASSLock system on early Envoys relied on a resistor built into the lock cylinder rather than a traditional transponder chip in the key, making it one of the last evolutions of the VATS (Vehicle Anti-Theft System) architecture. A whole family of SUVs, all secured by a tiny resistor.
