Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

2002 GMC Envoy Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Over on The Mesa in Santa Barbara, a guy flagged me down in a parking lot off Meade Avenue. He had his 2002 GMC Envoy sitting there with the hood up, which turned out to have nothing to do with the actual problem. He just popped it out of habit while he waited.

His story was the one I hear constantly. Bought the truck used a few years back with one key. Always meant to get a copy made. Never did. Then the fob housing cracked at the seam, the blade separated, and what was left of the blade was stuck in the ignition cylinder.

The good news was the fob housing was cracked, not crushed. The transponder chip inside was still intact. I tested it before doing anything else so we both knew what we were working with. That mattered because it meant I could transfer the working components into a new shell rather than starting from scratch on a full all-keys-lost procedure.

I extracted the jammed blade from the ignition, decoded the lock cylinder, and cut two new blades to match. The chip from his original fob went into a fresh housing, and I programmed the second remote on site so he left with two working keys instead of one.

He watched the whole thing on the tailgate. When both remotes cycled the locks cleanly and the truck started on the first try, he looked at the two keys in his hand like he was doing the math on how long he had been one bad day away from exactly this situation.

Forty-some minutes, start to finish. The dealer had quoted him a number that made him wince just recalling it. He saved a good chunk and got a spare key out of it, which is the part he should have done three years earlier.
