1998 GMC Envoy Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I was parked near the College area of Ventura, wrapping up another call, when a guy flagged me down from across the lot. He had a 1998 GMC Envoy and a fob that had stopped working on three of its four buttons. Lock still clicked. Everything else was dead.
He'd already bought a replacement fob online. It was sitting in a little plastic bag on his passenger seat, unprogrammed. He figured he'd just swap batteries and maybe it would work on its own. It didn't.
We went through it together. His original fob got a fresh CR2032 and a resync first, just to rule out the obvious. Two of the three dead buttons came back. The third didn't. That told me the original fob had a worn contact internally, not a receiver or wiring issue. The body control module was hearing the signal just fine.
So we moved to the fob he bought online. Programmed it through the OBD port, ran through all four buttons, confirmed range from across the lot. Clean. He asked why the dealer wanted so much longer and charged so much more for what turned out to be a 25-minute job at his vehicle. I didn't have a good answer for him, because honestly there isn't one.
