About Mazda Keys

Mazda key replacement overview in Ventura County

Mazda's Advanced Keyless Entry system spans four chip generations from the original ID46 transponders of the late 1990s through the ID70-based smart keys on current CX-5, CX-30, and Mazda3 models. We program every generation on site at your location, no dealer trip required.

Every Mazda Key Type, Cut and Programmed On Site

Mazda

Mazda introduced transponder chip keys around 1998 and spent the following decade building out the ID46 platform across the 626, Mazda3, Mazda6, and CX-7 lineup. When Skyactiv technology arrived in 2012, proximity push-to-start became standard equipment on the CX-5 and spread across the full lineup through the mid-2010s.

Mazda What Each Chip Generation Requires

What Each Chip Generation Requires

The 2017 and newer models moved to the ID70 encrypted chip, which requires online authentication through Mazda's diagnostic system to program. One detail worth knowing: the NC-generation Miata from 2006 through 2015 uses a Ford PATS 4D63 chip from the Mazda-Ford partnership era, which programs differently from the rest of the Mazda lineup. We carry blanks and programmed fobs for every generation, handle the OBD programming on site, and get you moving without a dealer appointment or a tow.

Mazda CX-5 Key Replacement

Mazda

The CX-5 is the most common Mazda we service in Southern California and it has gone through three distinct key system generations since its 2013 debut. The first-generation CX-5 from 2013 through 2016 uses an ID46 or ID47 encrypted transponder chip with a standard proximity fob on push-to-start trims. Programming requires OBD access and a PIN pulled from the BCM, but is straightforward with the right tooling and does not require towing or a dealer visit. The second-generation CX-5 from 2017 onward moved to the ID70 chip and the WAZSKE11D01 smart key platform. This generation requires online authentication through Mazda's diagnostic system, which our current tool subscriptions support.

Mazda CX-5 Battery Trap to Avoid

CX-5 Battery Trap to Avoid

The third-generation CX-5 beginning with the 2026 model year carries over the ID70 architecture. The fob battery on all second and third-generation CX-5 models is a CR2025, not a CR2032. This catches a lot of owners off guard when they buy the wrong replacement at the auto parts store and the fob fails immediately after the swap.

Mazda Dealer vs. EZ Car Keyz

Mazda dealer vs EZ Car Keyz pricing comparison

Mazda dealerships charge $200 or more for a key fob and $250 to $500 or more for a smart key replacement including programming. Models that could once be owner-programmed are now past the 2013 cutoff and require dealer-level tools to service. We handle every Mazda generation on site at your location for significantly less, with the correct hardware in stock and no appointment needed.

Mazda Key Problems We Fix

Sound familiar? We handle all of these -on site, same day.

Mazda Wrong Battery Size After Fob Swap
Wrong Battery Size After Fob Swap
Most Mazda push-to-start fobs from 2017 onward use a CR2025, not the more common CR2032 found in most other vehicles. The CR2025 is slightly thinner. Installing a CR2032 can crack the fob case or create a poor contact fit that causes the fob to fail immediately after the swap. Earlier 2014 through 2016 models may use a CR2032. Always check the battery compartment markings or match the old battery before buying a replacement. No reprogramming is needed after a correct battery swap.
Mazda Keyless System Malfunction After Body Work
Keyless System Malfunction After Body Work
Mazda's keyless proximity antennas are routed through the door handles and center console area. After a collision repair, door replacement, or body shop visit, a disconnected antenna wire is a common cause of a keyless system malfunction warning where the push-to-start button does not respond to the fob. If your Mazda's keyless system stopped working after being in a shop, a disconnected antenna connector is likely the cause rather than the fob or the key system itself.
Mazda Transponder Not Recognized After Battery Disconnect
Transponder Not Recognized After Battery Disconnect
On ID46 and ID47 era Mazdas from roughly 2004 through 2016, disconnecting the vehicle battery can sometimes cause the BCM to require the key to be relearned. The car will crank but not start and there are no warning lights beyond the standard security indicator. This is distinct from a fob battery issue and requires the existing key to be reprogrammed to the vehicle via OBD. We diagnose the difference on site before recommending any parts.
Mazda NC Miata PATS Conflict
NC Miata PATS Conflict
The 2006 through 2015 NC-generation MX-5 Miata uses Ford's PATS transponder system and is frequently mishandled when owners or shops use standard Mazda ID46 programming tools that do not cover the Ford 4D63 chip. A PATS conflict cranks the engine but prevents it from starting, with the security light on. Programming the NC Miata correctly requires Ford PATS compatible equipment, not Mazda tooling. This trips up a lot of locksmiths and shops that do not know about the Ford platform connection.

Mazda Key Fob Battery Guide

Mazda How to Open

How to Open

Flip the fob over and locate the small release tab or lever near the base. Press the tab and slide off the back plate, or use a coin in the seam to gently separate the halves. The battery sits inside with the positive side facing up. Snap the case back together firmly until the clips click.

Most Mazda push-to-start fobs from 2017 onward use a CR2025, which is slightly thinner than the CR2032 found in most other vehicles. Installing a CR2032 in a fob designed for CR2025 can crack the case or create a poor contact fit. Earlier 2014 through 2016 models may use a CR2032, so match the old battery before buying a replacement. No reprogramming is needed after a correct battery swap on any Mazda model. On 2014 through 2018 Mazda3 and CX-5 fobs, use a plastic pry tool when opening the seam to avoid cracking the case.

Pro Tip

Mazda pro tip

If you own a 2014 through 2021 Mazda3, there is a separate security issue worth knowing about that has nothing to do with your key. Researchers disclosed six unpatched vulnerabilities in the Mazda Connect infotainment system that allow code execution if someone connects a specifically crafted USB device to your vehicle's USB port. The attack requires physical access and cannot be done wirelessly, but it means anyone with unsupervised time around your car, such as a valet or a detailer, could potentially exploit the system. Mazda had not released a patch as of early 2026.

Mazda Relay Attack Protection for Mazda

Relay Attack Protection for Mazda

On the key side, Mazda's 2024 and newer CX-90 and CX-70 models have begun adding Ultra-Wideband proximity verification to resist relay attacks, the same approach Land Rover and Volvo have deployed. If you have an older Mazda with standard keyless entry, a Faraday pouch for overnight fob storage is the most practical countermeasure available and costs a few dollars at most retailers.

Mazda Owners on Our Service

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"Called on New Year's Day at 5 PM. Key worked on ignition and passenger door but not the driver door. He looked at the key more closely and said it could be a worn out key versus a door cylinder. Got the spare key and it worked. Saved me more than $100 compared to changing the door cylinder. Prompt, professional and fair pricing."

Gordon Harada
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"EZ Car Keys is by far the best locksmith I've ever used. Marco is prompt, prices are reasonable, and he has the experience that leaves you comfortable. We've used him twice and will never use anyone else!"

Traci Thomas
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"Simply amazing. They honored their phone quote even though the job took much longer due to problems with my ignition cylinder. They disassembled, repaired, made two new keys and programmed key fobs - all for the original quote."
