How the CX-5 Key System Evolved
First Generation (KE)
This is where security got serious for Mazda's compact SUV. Your CX-5 uses an ID 46 transponder chip (PCF7952 or similar) paired with Mazda's NATS immobilizer, and depending on your trim, you might have a traditional remote head key or a smart key with push-button start. We program these on-site using OBD-II, no dealer visit required.
First Generation Facelift (KE)
Mazda refined the KE platform for 2017 and moved all trims to smart key with push-button start. The ID 46 chip carries over, and the NATS immobilizer stays the same, but this is a transition year where some parts overlap with the next generation. We handle it through OBD-II programming with our Autel IM608 or compatible scanners.
Second Generation (KF)
Here is where things jumped. Mazda switched to the ID 47 chip (HITAG AES encryption) and Advanced NATS immobilizer, which means significantly tighter security. Programming requires server authentication on top of OBD-II access. We carry the Xhorse VVDI Key Tool Plus and Autel platforms that handle this, and all existing keys must be programmed together when adding a new one.
Second Generation Facelift (KF)
The 2025 KF facelift keeps the ID 47 chip and Advanced NATS system but tightens programming access further. Server authentication is required, and some procedures are currently dealer-only. We will tell you upfront what we can and cannot do on your specific 2025 before we roll out.
Third Generation (KI)
Mazda revealed the all-new KI platform in 2025 with a longer wheelbase and updated architecture. The smart key system is expected to use advanced NATS, but specific chip details are still being confirmed. Programming is dealer-level and server-authenticated. If you have a brand-new KI, call us at (805) 790-8162 and we will let you know exactly where things stand.
Which Key Does Your CX-5 Use?
Depending on your trim level, you either have a traditional key with buttons built into the head, or a smart fob with push-button start. Both use the same ID 46 chip and CR2032 battery.
All 2017 CX-5 models use a smart key fob with push-button start. The emergency blade tucks inside the fob for manual door entry if the battery dies.
Your KF generation smart key uses the upgraded ID 47 chip with HITAG AES encryption. Same CR2032 battery, same emergency blade, but significantly stronger security under the hood.
Whether your 2025 is the KF facelift or the new KI platform, you have a smart key with push-button start and an emergency blade. The key looks similar to prior years, but the programming requirements are different.
What Your CX-5 Key Costs
All prices include the key blank, cutting, programming, and testing; lockout service is $95-$125 and does not include key replacement.
EZ Car Keyz vs. the Dealer
Your insurance company does not care who made the key, just that it works. We use the same professional tools for about half the price.
Common CX-5 Key Problems
Fob Battery Drain
The KF smart key fobs (2017-2024) drain CR2032 batteries fast, especially during Ventura County summers. Constant proximity polling between fob and your CX-5's antennas is the culprit. Replacing every couple months is normal for these fobs.
Proximity Sensor Failure
First check on a 2017-2025 CX-5 that won't detect the fob: the door handle antenna. These antennas inside the handle wear out, especially driver-side. We scan, and if the antenna is the problem, we replace and reprogram on the spot.
Blade Wear on Standard Cut
Emergency blade feeling rough in the door cylinder, or the key won't turn smoothly. Standard-cut blades on every CX-5 generation (2013-2025) wear over time, causing no-start in manual ignition. We cut fresh on-site and test before leaving.
Transponder Programming Lockout
People think the CX-5's immobilizer is broken when it locked itself out after a failed programming attempt. Hits 2018-2025 KF models with Advanced NATS. Fix is a full ECU reset and server re-authentication. Within an hour in Simi Valley.
Can You Program a CX-5 Key Yourself?
No DIY self-programming method exists for these models. You need professional OBD-II tools to read the immobilizer PIN and program the transponder chip.
Even with two working keys, there is no true self-programming procedure. An OBD-II diagnostic tool with Mazda software is required to add or replace smart keys.
No generation of CX-5 supports customer self-programming for new keys. You can resync a fob after a battery change, but adding a new transponder always requires professional equipment and, on 2018+ models, server authentication.

Did You Know?
Most people do not know this: the Mazda CX-5 was the first vehicle to launch with Mazda's full SkyActiv technology suite, and that included an integrated NATS immobilizer system that uses rolling codes and challenge-response authentication. This means every time you start your CX-5, the car and the key have a unique encrypted conversation. It is one of the reasons aftermarket cloning without specialized tools is nearly impossible on these vehicles.
