2019 Mazda CX-5 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A woman over in Oxnard Shores called me on a Tuesday afternoon. She'd just picked up a used 2019 CX-5 from a private seller and it came with one key. She wasn't panicked yet, just being smart about it. She wanted a spare before she needed one.
She had already called the Mazda dealer. The number they gave her landed somewhere in the range of serious money, and she said it out loud the way people do when a quote doesn't quite make sense to them.
I met her in the driveway. The CX-5 uses a proximity fob with a CR2025 inside, and the factory fob she had was the four-button version with the pull-out blade. I checked the existing key first, confirmed it was communicating cleanly with the vehicle, and then got to work on the second one. Adding a key to this system requires diagnostic equipment to register the new fob to the immobilizer. There's no button sequence, no ignition trick on a smart key setup like this. You need the right tools talking to the right module.
The whole job was done in the driveway in under an hour. Both fobs worked on every function, and the push-button start recognized either one without hesitation.
She asked at the end why the dealer quoted so much more. I told her honestly: they're not wrong to charge what they charge. Different overhead, different setup. But the job itself doesn't get harder just because it's done at a dealership.
