How the CX-9 Key System Changed Over the Years
First Generation (TB)
Your first gen CX-9 uses a transponder key with a Texas 4D or ID46 chip inside. It looks like a regular key with buttons on the fob, and you turn it in the ignition to start. Programming requires OBD-II tools and a PIN code, so this is a locksmith or dealer job, but it is one of the more straightforward Mazda keys we work on.
First Generation Facelift (TB)
Your facelift CX-9 carries the same transponder system with a Texas 4D or ID46 chip. Mazda refreshed the styling but kept the key system identical. Same 3-button fob, same standard blade, same OBD-II programming process we use on the earlier models.
First Generation Second Facelift (TB)
Your late first gen CX-9 still uses the transponder key with a Texas 4D or ID46 chip and standard blade. This is the final run of the TB platform before Mazda overhauled everything for the second generation. We program these on-site with OBD-II tools, and the process is quick.
Second Generation (TC)
Your second gen CX-9 jumped to a smart key system with an ID47 or newer chip and a laser-cut emergency blade tucked inside the fob. Push-button start is standard across the board. Programming requires advanced diagnostic equipment and may involve server authentication on newer years, but we handle it mobile with the right tools.
Which Key Does Your CX-9 Use?
A chunky fob with a flip-out or fixed blade. You insert this key into the ignition and turn it to start. The transponder chip inside talks to your immobilizer every time.
Same key design as the earlier first gen. Three buttons, standard blade, and a transponder chip that must match your CX-9's immobilizer to start the engine.
Identical key system to the earlier TB models. If you have a first gen CX-9 from any year, the key looks and works the same way.
A slimmer, more modern fob that stays in your pocket. You press a button on the dash to start. There is a small emergency blade hidden inside the fob for manual door entry if the battery dies.

Every price includes the key blank, cutting, programming, and on-site testing at your location in Ventura County.
EZ Car Keyz vs. the Dealer
The dealer sells you a protection plan for the key they overcharged you for. We just give you a fair price from the start.
Common CX-9 Key Problems
Key Fob Battery Depletion
First check on an unresponsive CX-9 fob: the battery. CR2032 cells last about two years, and when they go, buttons quit and push-button start may not detect the fob. $5 fix you can do at home; we'll walk you through it over the phone.
Transponder Chip Failure
People assume the ignition is bad when their 2007-2015 CX-9 cranks but won't start. Nine times out of ten, the transponder chip has failed. Chip stops talking to the immobilizer. We test on-site and program a new key in your driveway.
Smart Key System Malfunction
Your 2016+ CX-9 doesn't recognize the fob at the door handle, or push-button start ignores you. Intermittent smart key failure on second-gen. Sometimes the fob battery, sometimes a deeper fob-to-module issue. We diagnose on-site before a new key.
Key Blade Wear and Breakage
Standard blades on first-gen CX-9 keys wear from daily ignition use. Metal thins, grooves shallow, and one day the key won't turn or snaps inside. Second-gen laser-cut blades are tougher but cost more. We cut new blades on-site matched to your locks.
Can You Program a CX-9 Key Yourself?
You can program the remote lock and unlock buttons yourself using an on-board procedure if you have at least one working key. But the transponder chip, the part that actually lets the car start, requires professional OBD-II tools and a PIN code. So you can pair a new fob's buttons at home, but you still need us to make the key actually start the engine.
No DIY option here. The 2016 and newer CX-9 uses an advanced smart key system that requires professional diagnostic equipment for both the remote functions and the transponder programming. There is no on-board procedure available for these years.
