2017 Mazda CX-9 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I was up in Eucalyptus Hill on a Tuesday afternoon when a shop foreman from a nearby alignment place called me. Not about his own car.
A customer had dropped off a 2017 CX-9 and a different locksmith had tried to program a replacement smart key the day before. The tool disconnected partway through the security wait sequence. After that, the car wouldn't start, and the immobilizer was sitting in a fault state. The customer was still waiting.
When I got there, I could see what had happened. The previous tech had started the key registration, the connection dropped mid-sequence, and the module locked up. Some guys see that and start talking about towing to the dealer. I've been through this before.
First thing I did was stabilize battery voltage with my jump pack. A low or fluctuating supply during programming is often what causes the dropout in the first place, and trying again without addressing it just repeats the problem. Then I cleared the fault codes through the OBD port and confirmed the module was responsive before touching any programming functions.
Clean slate. I ran the registration sequence from the start, kept the connection solid, and let the security timer finish without interruption. The fob paired on the first attempt. Tested all four buttons, tested ignition start, walked the door handles. Everything worked.
The customer had been waiting a long time by that point. She didn't say much. She just took her keys and left, which honestly is the best outcome. The job took me about an hour and fifteen minutes total. The dealer would have needed a tow, a diagnosis appointment, and a few days. I don't know what she paid the first locksmith, but she only paid once more after that.
