I was up in Eucalyptus Hill on a Tuesday afternoon when a shop foreman from a nearby alignment place called me. Not about his own car. A customer had dropped off a 2017 CX-9 and a different locksmith had tried to program a replacement smart key the day before. The tool disconnected partway through the security wait sequence. Clean slate. I ran the registration sequence from the start, kept the connection solid, and let the security timer finish without interruption. The fob paired on the first attempt. Tested all four buttons, tested ignition start, walked the door handles. Everything worked.
The customer had been waiting a long time by that point. She didn't say much. She just took her keys and left, which honestly is the best outcome. The job took me about an hour and fifteen minutes total. The dealer would have needed a tow, a diagnosis appointment, and a few days. I don't know what she paid the first locksmith, but she only paid once more after that.
