2022 Mazda CX-9 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Out in Limoneira, Santa Paula, a woman flagged me down in the parking area near her CX-9. She does dog walking routes in the area and her car had started throwing a key-not-detected warning on the push-button start intermittently. Some mornings it fired right up. Other mornings she was standing there pressing the brake and getting nothing.
She mentioned another locksmith had made her a replacement key a few weeks earlier. That was the tell.
I asked her to hand me both the working original and the replacement. The original fired the car every time. The replacement was hit or miss. When I connected my diagnostic tool, the replacement key showed it had been enrolled in the system, but when I looked closer at how it was responding to the vehicle's security handshake, the data profile wasn't consistent. It would pass on a cold start, then the vehicle would do a deeper check mid-drive-cycle and the mismatch would surface. By the next cold start, detection was flaky again.
This is the thing with Mazda's keyless system: it doesn't always reject a bad key at enrollment. Sometimes it passes the first handshake and fails the verification that comes later. Owners assume the car has an electrical problem. It's not the car.
I reprogrammed the replacement fob correctly, confirmed both keys were enrolling and verifying clean, and swapped the CR2025 while I had it open because the battery was already running low.
She tested it herself, twice, before I packed up. It caught every time. She said she'd been rearranging her whole morning schedule around the car being unpredictable. That part I can't fix retroactively, but at least the key is done right now.
