Your B-Series Key System, Explained
Fourth Generation (UN Series)
Your B-Series uses a Texas 4D transponder chip embedded in the key head. That chip talks to the Ford PATS immobilizer system every time you turn the ignition, and if the signal does not match, the engine will not start. It is a simple, reliable system that we program through the OBD-II port under your dash.
B2500 (I4 Models)
Your 2.5L four-cylinder B2500 runs the same Texas 4D chip and PATS system as the rest of the lineup. The ignition cylinder on these trucks is a known wear point, so if your key feels rough going in, that is worth mentioning when you call. We program through OBD-II and carry the right blanks on every truck.
B3000/B4000 (V6 Models)
Your 3.0L or 4.0L V6 model shares the same Texas 4D transponder and PATS security as the B2500. Higher trim levels sometimes came with an optional three-button remote fob for keyless entry. We verify your exact PATS type through diagnostics before cutting anything, so there are no surprises.
Which Key Does Your B-Series Use?
A standard metal key with a thick plastic head. The transponder chip lives inside that head and communicates with your truck's PATS system every time you start it.
Same style key as the rest of the B-Series. No buttons, no battery. The chip inside the key head is what lets your engine start.
Identical transponder key to the B2500. Some higher trims had a separate remote fob for door cylinders, but the ignition key itself has no buttons.
The Real Cost of a B-Series Key
Price includes key blank, cutting, transponder programming, and on-site service anywhere in Ventura County.
EZ Car Keyz vs. the Dealer
When your truck will not start at 9 PM in Simi Valley, the dealer is closed. We are not.
Common B-Series Key Problems
Transponder Chip Failure
First check is the transponder signal. Your Texas 4D chip degrades over time, especially in high-mileage trucks that baked in California heat for two decades. We read what's left, clone to a fresh key, and get you running on the spot.
Ignition Cylinder Wear
People think the key is the problem when it's actually the cylinder. Past 20+ years of daily use, the ignition cylinder on B-Series trucks binds. We replace the cylinder on-site and cut a new transponder key to match.
PATS Module Antenna Ring Failure
Truck cranks some mornings, refuses others. That intermittent no-crank usually points to the PATS antenna ring, the coil that reads your transponder. When it fails, signal drops in and out. We carry replacements and swap on-site in Oxnard or Camarillo.
Can You Program a B-Series Key Yourself?
No. The PATS transponder system on your B-Series requires professional diagnostic tools to program a new key. You cannot do this at home without specialized equipment.
If your truck has the optional keyless entry remote, you can program that yourself. Turn the ignition from OFF to RUN eight times within ten seconds, wait for the door cylinders to cycle, then press a button on the remote within 20 seconds. This only programs the remote functions, not the transponder chip.
