How Mazda MPV Keys Changed Over the Years
First Generation (LV)
No security to worry about here. Your MPV uses a simple mechanical key with no transponder chip and no immobilizer. We cut it on the spot with a standard code machine, and you drive away. Easiest Mazda key job there is.
Second Generation (LW)
This is where security got serious. Mazda added the NATS immobilizer system with an ID46 transponder chip embedded in the key head. That chip has to talk to your ECU before the engine will start, so a plain metal copy from the hardware store will turn the ignition but go nowhere. We use EEPROM programming or PIN extraction to register the new chip to your vehicle.
Second Gen Facelift (LW)
Mazda upgraded to a remote head key with three buttons: lock, unlock, and trunk. The transponder switched to a Texas 4D chip, which is more secure than the earlier ID46. Programming happens through the OBD-II port under your dash, meaning we plug in, register the chip, pair the remote, and you are done without leaving your driveway.
Third Generation (LY)
The final model year brought a platform change and a high security blade that requires a specialized code machine to cut. It still uses a Texas 4D chip, but the programming method shifted to server authentication. We handle this one differently and will tell you exactly what to expect before we roll out.
Which Key Does Your MPV Use?
A plain metal key with no chip inside. No remote, no battery, no programming needed. We cut it to code on site.
Looks like a regular key but has an ID46 chip hidden in the plastic head. The chip must be programmed to your MPV's immobilizer or the engine will not start.
Your key and remote are built into one unit with a Texas 4D transponder chip. Three buttons on the fob, and a CR1632 battery powers the remote functions.
Similar to the 2003-2005 key but with a high security blade that is harder to duplicate. Uses a Texas 4D chip and a CR2032 battery. Requires specialized cutting equipment.
How Much Does a Mazda MPV Key Cost?
All prices include the key blank, cutting, transponder programming, remote pairing, and a start test before we leave.

Common Mazda MPV Key Problems
Transponder Failure
The ID46 or Texas 4D chip in your key degrades over time, especially on MPVs with 15-25 years of use. Chip fails, key turns but the engine cranks and dies. We test the transponder signal first. Dead chip? We cut and program a new key on the spot.
Door Cylinder Actuator Failure
Before assuming the remote is broken, we check the actuator inside the door. MPV power lock actuators wear from heavy use, especially on sliding doors. The remote may be firing fine, but the mechanical part is stuck or burned out. We confirm before fixing.
Key Fob Battery Drain
Your 2003-2006 MPV remote head uses a CR1632, which drains fast. If range keeps shrinking, the battery is the culprit. Swap it for a few bucks. If the problem continues, the remote board itself may need replacement.
Immobilizer Sync Loss
People think their key broke when the real problem is a dead car battery. On 1999-2006 MPVs, draining the battery causes NATS to lose sync. Security light stays on, engine won't start. We run a full OBD relearn. Common Simi Valley and Camarillo call.
Can You Program a Mazda MPV Key Yourself?
No transponder, no immobilizer. Get the key cut to code and it works. Nothing to program.
You can pair a remote yourself using the door ajar programming method. But the ID46 transponder chip requires EEPROM programming or PIN extraction, which means professional tools. If you already have two working transponder keys, there is an on-board procedure to add a third, but it is timing-critical and easy to mess up.
Remote pairing works the same door ajar method as earlier years. The Texas 4D transponder chip needs OBD-II programming with professional equipment. If you have two working keys, the on-board add procedure may work, but we recommend calling us to avoid bricking the ECU.

Did You Know?
Back in 1995, Mazda did something unusual with the MPV. It was one of the first Japanese minivans offered with available four-wheel drive, sharing its platform with the Mazda Bongo, a commercial van popular in Japan and parts of Asia. The Bongo connection meant the early MPV was built more like a truck than a typical minivan, with a body-on-frame design that most competitors had already abandoned.
