Out in Hobson Park, right at the edge of the Oxnard coast, I got a call early morning from someone whose only key to a 2001 Mazda MPV had given up in the worst possible way. The blade had snapped off inside the driver door lock. Key head in one hand, nothing useful in the other.

I pulled the broken blade fragment out of the lock cylinder with my extractor tools, which takes a little patience on a lock that age because the tumblers are worn just enough to make it interesting. Once it was out, I had the broken blade right there to decode the cut. I matched the bitting off both pieces, cut a fresh metal key on the spot, and worked it through the door lock and ignition to make sure it seated cleanly everywhere.
The van started. Door opened smooth. Took maybe twenty minutes from the time I pulled up.
She mentioned the dealer route had come up in conversation with a friend who told her to expect a wait and a real bill. I did not get into specifics, but she saved a good chunk and did not have to arrange a tow or a ride across town.
