Got a call from a guy out in Hope Ranch community in Santa Barbara. He had a 1995 Mazda MPV that had been sitting in his driveway for a couple weeks. His only key snapped off in the driver's door lock. The blade broke right at the bow, clean snap, and the tip was still jammed in the cylinder.
He already called the Mazda dealer. They told him they'd need to order parts, probably replace the whole ignition and door lock set, and he'd have to get it towed in. Multiple days, easy.
I drove out and took a look. The broken piece was visible inside the door lock, wedged between two wafers. Extracted it with a hook pick in about two minutes. The cylinder itself was fine, just gunked up from years of coastal air and no lubrication.
I had his key code pulled from the VIN through my database. 1995 MPVs use the MZ16 keyway, and the bitting was still on file. Cut a fresh key on the HPC Blitz right there on his driveway, tested it in the door, the rear hatch, and the ignition.
He sat on his front steps the whole time, watching. When the engine turned over on the first try he just nodded and said "that's it?" That was it. No tow, no dealer wait, no lock replacement. A cut key and a cleaned-out cylinder, done on site.
