2000 Mazda MPV
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What kind of key does the 2000 Mazda MPV actually use?

It's a straight mechanical key. Metal blade, cut to a specific code, turns in the ignition and the door locks. No fob, no remote buttons, no battery to replace. If you lose it or break it, the fix is cutting a replacement to match your lock or your key code. That's the whole job.

Q: How does a locksmith compare to the dealer for replacing this key?

A dealer can cut a replacement key for a 2000 MPV, but you're looking at booking an appointment, leaving the vehicle there, and paying dealer shop rates for what is a simple mechanical cut. A mobile locksmith handles the same job at your location, usually faster, for a fraction of what the dealer charges. On a vehicle this age with a mechanical key, there's no programming involved that would make the dealer the only option. The cut is the cut.

Q: I only have the broken blade piece. Can a key still be made without the original?

Yes. If the blade snapped off inside the lock or ignition, the fragment can usually be extracted without damaging the cylinder, and then the lock itself gets decoded. The wafer positions inside the lock cylinder tell me exactly what depths to cut. I don't need the original key in your hand. I need access to the lock.

Q: Can I get a spare cut from my existing key, or does it need to come from the lock?

Either way works. If your existing key is in decent shape and not too worn, a locksmith or hardware shop can duplicate it directly. The cleaner approach for a daily driver is getting a key cut to the original code, either from your existing key or decoded from the lock, so the spare matches the factory spec rather than copying a worn blade. Worn-to-worn copies can develop ignition or door issues over time.

2000 Mazda MPV Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

In Oxnard's Historic District, I got a call from a guy who drives for a rideshare platform. He was parked between rides when his key blade snapped off inside the door lock. Clean break, right at the shoulder. Years of heavy daily use on one key will do that.

He'd already called another locksmith. That guy told him the cylinder would need to be drilled out. New lock hardware, new key, a long wait for parts.

I told him to sit tight.

When I got there, I used a Lishi-style pick tool to carefully work out the broken blade fragment without touching the wafer surfaces inside the cylinder. Takes patience, but it beats destroying the lock. Once the fragment was out, I decoded the cut depths right from the cylinder itself, ran the code, and cut a fresh key blade on site.

Turned the key. Started first try.

No drilling. No new cylinder. No tow to a dealer. The other guy's approach would have taken days and cost him a serious chunk of working time on top of the parts bill. I was done in under an hour and he was back on the road before his next ride request came in.

Destructive entry is always a last resort. On a 2000 MPV, it almost never needs to be.

Mazda MPV Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Why does key replacement cost what it does, even on an older vehicle like this?▼

On a 2000 Mazda MPV, the key itself is a metal blade with no chip, no fob, no programming required. So the cost is mostly about the service call, the decoding work, and the cut. What you're paying for is having someone come to you, extract a broken blade cleanly if needed, decode the lock, and cut a key that works the first time. That's different from a modern key job where programming adds a big chunk of labor.
