CX-3 Key Technology by Generation
First Generation (DJ Platform)
Mazda kept things consistent across the entire CX-3 run. Your key is a 3-button remote head with a laser-cut blade, a CR2032 battery, and a transponder chip that communicates with Mazda's immobilizer system through OBD-II programming. No mid-cycle changes, no surprises. If you have a 2016 or a 2021, the key hardware and programming process are identical.
Which Key Does Your CX-3 Use?
This is the only key type for your CX-3. It is a traditional turn-in-the-ignition key with built-in remote buttons and a transponder chip inside. No push-button start on this model.
How Much Does a Mazda CX-3 Key Cost?

Common CX-3 Key Problems
Remote Fob Battery Depletion
The CR2032 in your CX-3 remote head isn't rechargeable and wears down. Once dead, lock/unlock buttons quit, and the transponder signal weakens enough to throw starting issues. We carry CR2032s on every call and swap in 30 seconds.
Key Blade Wear on Laser-Cut Keys
Key getting harder to turn or rough in the door cylinder. Laser-cut blades are precision-milled, and years of use throw off tolerances. Stuck in Simi Valley or Camarillo? Call (805) 790-8162 before the blade fails entirely.
Immobilizer Communication Failure
People assume a no-start means a dead battery or bad starter. On the CX-3, the real culprit is often the transponder chip failing to authenticate with the immobilizer. We check the transponder signal first, then verify through OBD-II.
Keyless Entry Antenna Interference
First check on dropping remote range: aftermarket accessories. Mazda TSB (01-007/20) covers 2016-2021 CX-3s because phone mounts, dash cams, and chargers near the steering column interfere with the keyless antenna. Relocate and it fixes.
Can You Program a CX-3 Key Yourself?
Mazda does not support self-programming on the CX-3. Every new key requires professional OBD-II programming with tools like the Autel IM608 or Xhorse VVDI Key Tool Plus. There is no ignition cycle trick or button sequence that will register a new transponder.

Did You Know?
The Mazda CX-3 on the DJ platform was Mazda's entry into the subcompact crossover segment, slotting below the CX-5. Every model year from 2016 through 2021 used the same 2.0L SKYACTIV-G engine producing 146 to 148 horsepower, making it one of the few modern crossovers to go an entire generation without a single engine update.
