I got a call from a driver parked on a frontage road near Rose Park in Oxnard. He was running rides between shifts and his 2017 CX-3 fob had gone completely dead on him. Not weak, not intermittent. Dead. The car was showing a key-not-detected warning every time he walked up to it, and he'd already swapped what he thought was a fresh battery.
When I got there, he handed me the fob. The battery inside was a CR2032. Someone had told him it was the same thing, close enough. It isn't. The CR2025 is thinner, and when you drop a CR2032 in, the contact plate flexes just enough that the connection is unreliable. Sometimes it works. Sometimes the car treats it like an empty fob.
I seated a correct CR2025, snapped the fob back together, and walked the door handles. Touch unlock came back on the driver side. The dash stopped complaining. The whole thing took about four minutes.
He'd been two hours into troubleshooting a problem that started with the wrong battery in the wrong slot.
I don't always need a programmer on the first call. Sometimes the job is just knowing what size cell goes in which fob.
