Jeep introduced the Sentry Key Immobilizer System in 1998 across the Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, and Wrangler TJ lineup. The 2005 Grand Cherokee WK was the first Jeep with a smart proximity key, and by 2011 Keyless Enter 'N Go had spread to the Wrangler JK and most of the passenger lineup. Programming any Jeep from 2005 onward requires a vehicle security PIN pulled from the Wireless Control Module or RF Hub, which we retrieve on site using JScan or Autel tooling.

What to Do When Your Jeep Fob Dies

Find the small release button on the side of your Jeep key fob and press it to slide out the hidden mechanical key blade. This blade is for door entry only and will not start the vehicle.

Locate the door lock cylinder on the driver's door, usually hidden under a small pry-off cover on the door handle area. Use the blade to manually unlock the door and get in. The alarm may sound briefly but will stop once you start the vehicle.

Once inside with the door closed, hold the dead fob with the nose or top end pressed directly against the push-to-start button. On Grand Cherokee models, press the top of the fob against the button. On Wrangler JL, press the RFID chip end of the fob against the button. The vehicle's coil antenna inside the button reads the fob's passive transponder without needing battery power.

Press and hold the brake pedal firmly with your foot, then press the start button normally while still holding the fob against it. The vehicle should start. If the dashboard shows Key Fob Not Detected, you may need to reposition the fob slightly and try again.

Once moving, replace the CR2032 battery as soon as possible. Use a Panasonic brand battery for best results with Jeep fobs. No reprogramming is needed after a battery swap.

If you own a 2015 Jeep Cherokee, your vehicle was part of one of the most significant automotive security recalls in history. Fiat Chrysler recalled approximately 1.4 million Uconnect-equipped vehicles after security researchers demonstrated they could remotely control a Jeep Cherokee via the Sprint cellular network without any physical access, taking over the infotainment system, climate controls, and at low speeds, the brakes and transmission. The vulnerability was in the head unit's network architecture, not the key system, but it showed how deeply connected modern vehicles are and how a single unpatched component can create a serious entry point. Fiat Chrysler issued a USB software patch and added network firewalls. If you have a 2015 Cherokee and have not had this patch applied, contact a Jeep dealer with your VIN.
Relay Theft on Jeep Wranglers
On the key side, Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator owners in Southern California should be aware that relay theft of proximity-keyed Jeeps has been confirmed in real-world thefts. Thieves have targeted high-value Wranglers specifically using relay amplification devices. Storing your key fob in a Faraday pouch overnight blocks the signal and eliminates this attack entirely. A steering wheel lock adds a visible deterrent that relay thieves typically avoid.
