TJ: The SKIM Era
Jeep introduced the Sentry Key Immobilizer Module here, and it changed everything for Wrangler security. Your TJ uses a Texas 4D transponder chip embedded in a standard blade key with no remote buttons. We read the PIN from the SKIM module and program through OBD-II, usually in about 20 minutes in your driveway.
JK: Remote Head Key
Jeep stepped things up here with a 3-button remote head key running an ID46 (PCF7936/PCF7941) chip. You still turn this key in the ignition, but now you get lock, unlock, and panic buttons built into the head. The SKIM system stuck around, so programming is still OBD-II based. CR2032 battery keeps the remote side alive.
JL: Smart Key and Push-Button Start
This is where security got serious. The JL moved to a 5-button smart key with a HITAG AES (PCF7939MA) chip, push-button start, and a high-security blade for emergency use. Programming requires FCA server authentication, which means we need an active connection to Mopar's servers. It takes longer, but we handle it on-site so you skip the tow truck.
Which Key Does Your Wrangler Use?
A simple metal key with a transponder chip hidden inside the plastic head. No buttons, no battery. It either starts the engine or it does not.
Looks like a regular key with a chunky head. Three buttons for lock, unlock, and panic. The transponder chip and remote are all in one piece.
A proximity fob that stays in your pocket. Five buttons, push-button start, and a hidden high-security emergency blade tucked inside the fob.

SKIM Module Failure
The SKIM module sits behind your ignition switch, and when it fails your Wrangler will not start. Period. Hits TJ and JK from 1997-2018. We diagnose on-site and replace and reprogram without a tow to the dealer.
Transponder Chip Recognition Loss
Turn the key, engine cranks a second, dies. Wrangler's immobilizer is rejecting the transponder signal, usually after a battery disconnect or jump. We reset SKIM and reprogram through OBD-II. Weekly fix in Simi Valley and Camarillo.
Fob Battery Drain
Owners assume the fob is broken when constant RF polling kills the CR2032 fast. JL smart keys are especially bad. We test the fob, swap the battery, and verify signal strength before recommending anything more expensive.
Proxy Alignment Issues
First check on a JL that will not crank: proxy alignment. The smart key and vehicle RFID system must sync precisely. Off slightly and you get a no-crank or the fob stops responding. We realign and reprogram on-site using FCA server auth.
Can You Program a Wrangler Key Yourself?
No self-programming option exists for the TJ. The SKIM system requires a professional programmer and the vehicle's PIN code, which we can retrieve on-site.
If you already have two working keys, you can add a third yourself using a timed ignition sequence. You cannot do this with fewer than two working keys, and it only programs the transponder, not the remote buttons.
Same deal as the JK: two working keys let you add a new transponder through an ignition procedure. But the remote and proximity functions still need separate programming, and all-keys-lost situations require FCA server access. Call us at (805) 790-8162 if you are down to one key or zero.
